Beulah Harridiene is the town's school teacher with a distorted sense of duty and responsibility. Beulah shows cruelty towards the whole class except Stewart Pettyman because she has taken a 'liking' to his father. Beulah punishes Tilly for everything Stewart deliberately did to get her in trouble, without a question as to who really did it. An example of this is shown Stewart spills something on her own work, and blames Tilly for it, getting her in a significant amount of trouble. Beulah abused her authority relating to the death of Stewart, she knew that Tilly didn't kill him, however, she lied about it, until Tilly returned and wanted answers.

The "murder" was kept as a big part of the film 'The Dressmaker.'
WHO?
Beulah Harridiene:
The towns school teacher was actually a witness on the day of the murder. She was inside the classroom at the time.
In the flashback that occurs, you are able to see that the teacher pretends not to see Tilly getting hurt by Stewart. This is due to Stewart being Beulah's favourite student. Hence she pretends she can not see anything or hear any screams from Tilly, and continues this by closing the blinds so that she is unable to witness if Tilly got injured, as she did not care about her.

Tilly
Tilly wanted to know if these lies were true, as she could not remember the death of Stewart and if she was the murderer.

One aspect is Tilly's viewpoint on the towns people as they are seen as less sophisticated than her. Spending most of her life in places such as Melbourne and Paris, being associated with brands such as Dior, she had been surrounded with high class people. As she had come back home Tilly was immersed into a typical 1950 country town environment. Many people did not care about their appearance, usually having knotted hair and bland outfits. The people of Dungatar also acted very differently to her, and the people she was usually with, using a lot of colloquial language and having different body language. Through the way she perceives the towns people, she had made the judgement that they were seen as lesser than her.

In another aspect, it can be seen that the towns people have prejudice over Tilly. However this is a completely different form, where Tilly believed she was better in a way of appearance and sophistication, the towns people believe they are better in a way of morals. The towns people had believed for along time that Tilly was the murderer of Stewart Pettimen. With this belief in their heads, they felt as though they were overall better people than her, making the judgement that she was a bad person, without getting to know her. Even prior to the 'murder' of Stewart, the town had very poor thoughts of both Tilly and her mother, Mad Molly, as she gave birth to Tilly out of wedlock. This caused the towns people to see Molly as a women who slept around, however she was just unable to tell them that Pettimen was the father.

In the beginning of the film Gertrude Pratt was overlooked and had low self-esteem. This changed when Tilly approached Gertrude telling her that a dress can make her beautiful and confident. At first Gertrude thought it wouldn't change anything but was to tempted to not take her offer. After getting a dress from Tilly it immediately changed her personality and she became more snobby and overly confident.
