Beulah punishes Tilly for everything Stewart deliberately did to get her in trouble, without a question as to who really did it. Beulah Harridiene: 
The towns school teacher was actually a witness on the day of the murder. She was inside the classroom at the time. 
In the flashback that occurs, you are able to see that the teacher pretends not to see Tilly getting hurt by Stewart. This is due to Stewart being Beulah's favourite student. Hence she pretends she can not see anything or hear any screams from Tilly, and continues this by closing the blinds so that she is unable to witness if Tilly got injured, as she did not care about her.

The residents of the  town were constantly surrounded by and involved themselves in gossip. 
From the day that Tilly was accused of being a 'murderer', the people of the town started to gossip about Tilly but also about her mother, 'Mad Molly'.

Molly lost her daughter, as she was blamed with killing Steward. In the movie Molly says "You were sent away by them to hurt me" which clearly states that although Molly was mean to Tilly at the start there was a mother-daughter relationship that couldn't be replaced.
Marigold Pettyman lost her son. Due to this incident Marigold is left in a state where she suffers from anxiety disorder.

Gertrude Pratt for example shows us how fashion can influence the way you feel about yourself and how it changes your personality. In the beginning of the film Gertrude Pratt was overlooked and had low self-esteem. This changed when Tilly approached Gertrude telling her that a dress can make her beautiful and confident. At first Gertrude thought it wouldn't change anything but was to tempted to not take her offer. After getting a dress from Tilly it immediately changed her personality and she became more snobby and overly confident.
