The World of Work and Business by Melissa Thomas

"Bartleby the Scrivener" is one of the first great stories of corporate discontent. How does the description of the office lend itself to this theme? How does the narrator become a “victim” of progress? How do the descriptions of the physical landscape further the theme of “corporate discontent” in the world of work?

The description of the office describes how lonely it is since it's made of brick walls and all people do is just copy lengthy documents for a long period of time. Also, it shows how some businesses only care about the profit they generate and not about the welfare of their employees as shown in the story. The narrator becomes a victim of progress since Bartleby was in bad shape and the narrator felt guilty since he played a role in Bartleby's death by making him feel isolated and assigning him to copy large amounts of documents. The description of the physical landscape connects to the corporate discontent since it shows how in businesses not everyone is satisfied with the conditions they work in.

The whole story is a description of Capitalism and the corporate world. We all repeat the same cycles of life everyday working up and going to work. This can make us depressed, and isolated. The office building being on Wall Street especially is a symbolism of Capitalism. Bartleby being surrounded by walls though sharing on office can also show us this isolation. Along with the fact that the only window he has looks out to a brick wall.

The description of Bartleby's office connects to the theme of discontent because he was miserable and melancholy. So much so, that he had a bland personality and barely spoke. The narrator is a victim of progress because he, like others, is very tied down to his job and is his number one priority. The physical landscape is described as very plain, boring, and isolated, which helps to build upon the theme of corporate discontent.

The story of Bartleby the scrivener is basically talking about not being happy with the job you have. It talks about being in a endless every day cycle of going to work in corporate America and not enjoying it. Which may cause you to be in a state of being unhappy and depressed. The office lends to the theme because it describes a dull place with brick walls. It is not a place that would seem to make a person happy. The narrator becomes a victim of progress because he is stuck in the cycle of corporate America. The landscape furthers the theme of corporate discontent because like I said the place described and lifeless.

The description of the office describes how lonely and isolated the brick walled office is. Bartleby's job is very dreary which is what caused misery and depression. His life and job in general was very dull . The narrator becomes a victim in progress because he played a role in Bartleby's life which is why he was where he was in life. The phyisical landscape shows the isolaton from others with a break wall, it is a very uninteresting and unsatisfied room to be in all day.
