Based on the interview with Mike Rowes, it seems to be that Americans do not respect and value all types of work. There are plenty of job opportunities, and enough job opportunities, to solve the unemployment problem. Sadly, these open job position are not seen as respectable jobs, and therefore people ignore the offers or do not even hear of them. Mike Rowes’ work as he raises awareness for these “disrespectful” jobs allows people to value these jobs. It is so important, as Rowes said, to understand that all jobs come from agriculture and mining and that all jobs are necessary to have a health, working community.

I believe that America is built off the backs of farmers, factory workers, mechanics, truckers, and other blue collar jobs. However, I don’t believe that these Americans get the respect they deserve, nor the paycheck. These hardworking Americans are often thought of as the lesser sides of society, and that their careers are a dying profession or something that only the lowest or dumbest of society perform. Nowadays, kids in America dream of becoming the next ceo of a big tech company, the next big wolf of Wall Street, etc. The American Dream of creating your future with your own two hands seems now like a forgotten memory of the good ole days. I believe however that these professions are more important to society than we can understand, and we must begin to treat these blue collar workers with more respect and also need to put a bigger premium on their paycheck

I do not believe that all Americans respect and value all types of work and workers. There are plenty of job opportunities for the unemployed, but there is unfortunately some negative stigmas surrounding a lot of blue collar jobs that make the unemployed ignore the offers. Mike Rowe’s interview brings to light how the negative stigmas surrounding “dirty jobs” is widening the skill gap and increasing the unemployment rate. Some Americans need to remember that the world would not function well without the “dirty jobs”, and we therefore must learn to respect and value those jobs and workers.

I think all types of work are valued but they aren’t valued equally. The value that we place on work is the money that we are willing to pay for it. So the value of fast food work is minimum wage, while the value of a tech job is much higher. I don’t think that all work should be valued the same, because work isn’t given value randomly, it’s based on the market. Low skill jobs are valued less because there are more people able and willing to do that work than there are spaces for those workers. And high skilled jobs are valued more because there are less people with the necessary skills and education to do those jobs than there are spots for them, so companies compete for those workers, driving up the wages.

They lack respect for the blue collar work that drives society and allows citizens to live comfortably. This blue collar work demands more respect because it is the foundations of our economy and society. Americans need to change their outlook on respecting jobs.

I don’t think that Americans respect working workers because we view jobs like plumbers and electricians as extremely low-level jobs, to the point that even though there are many of these jobs available, those who are unemployed choose to remain unemployed instead of taking on these jobs. It is very important that people see beyond this stereotype because there isn’t a high demand for these jobs and we need help from these people in our everyday lives.
