Among the proteins carried by retrovirus particles is an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which upon infection of the cell transcribes the RNA genome into a DNA copy. This allows the virus to program the host T cell to destruct because it incorporates the new DNA strands into the host cell DNA. Pregnant women can also expose the baby through birth if they do not take proper precautions. In rare instances there have been cases of transmission through a blood transfusion. This causes compliance issues and the need for more meds to combat the side effects. The cost of the medications are often an issue as well.
