Mrs. Dubose is a symbol of bitterness and strength. Even though, she shows both strength and bitterness Mrs. Dubose was mainly a symbol of bitterness. The reader can see this because Mrs. Dubose had always had a sense of sass and rudeness towards everyone. The reader also learns that Mrs. Dubose had gone through an addiction from morphine and her fits and spells of bitterness. Mrs. Dubose was an example of strength because she was very strong to try and break her morphine addiction before she died.

-beth

But the reason she was so rude is because of her addiction to morphine making her character and very complex character. In the children's eyes Mrs. Dubose is someone they fear a little and someone they dread to see because of how rude she is and the harsh things she says about them and their father. The children are still kind to her and they try to be nice to her.

Atticus knew that Mrs. Dubose was struggling and had a goal to defeat her addiction. He saw Jem as a way to help her.

They dreaded walking by her house and having to see her sitting on her porch whenever they went into town. However, under closer inspection, Mrs. Dubose had exterior reasoning for her behavior and she was actually a very brave woman.

The reason why Mrs. Dubose as so bitter was because she was trying to quit morphine which shows her strength. But, Atticus said that when he was helping her with her and during this time she was not having one of her fits, she made a rude comment. So, she is a symbol of strength in the way that she is trying to quit morphine before she passes, and she is a symbol of bitterness because her real self can also be rude too.

Atticus knew that worse insults and talk would come later on so he thought that if Jem could keep his head about Mrs. Dubose he would be able to keep his head about the others. Also, the children go to Mrs. Maudie and they love to be with her because of how nice she is and the children hated being around Mrs. Dubose. So, Mrs. Maudie would be the light in this story because she is very kind and optimistic.

Throughout the chapter the reader can see how she treats the two children, which is very rude. She makes many comments about their father and how he treats other people. An example of her strength is shown at the end of the chapter when the author tells us that Mrs. Dubose wanted to break her morphine addiction before her passing.

He provides the children with helpful lessons and tries to help them with any problems that they have. This does not only apply to the children.

Mrs. Maudie represents the light in the story in many ways. She is always bright and optimistic about some of the worst situations. The childrens days are almost always brightened when they spend time with her. Whether it be for when she bakes them cakes or she just talks to them. As well as she makes sure the children know that she just wants to push them to be the best they can be and she explains a lot of things for the children. In many ways she is very different from Mrs Dubose. Mrs. Dubose's dark, rude, and bitter aura is the opposite from Mrs Maudie's bright, optimistic, and happy aura.
