The first step to process analysis is to understand what it means. So a good place to start is to look up the definition of process analysis.

Definition: directions, usually in essay format. These essays explain how to do something, how something works, or how something happens. They also present the steps in the process in chronological order, from first to last.

Definition provided by infoplease

The second thing to think about when writing this type of essay is: What does it accomplish?
What does it contain?
What type of writing is it?

A process analysis essay accomplishes two tasks: Providing instructions and explaining how something happens.

This type of essay contains most of your basic writing factors such as diction, style, ethos, logos and other modes of writing. It can also contain a specific tone or mood such as dark humor or sophistication. It can be by the book: very logical, practical, and factual;or it can be very creative such as adding your own personal twist to it while still keeping the basic format of the essay. Examples, usually of personal experience, can also be in these essays.

This type of essay falls under the category of expository writing, meaning that the essay will explain something in detail and elaborate on an idea or theory.

What the essay needs to look like.
- Have structure
- Have a LOGICAL format
- It can be by the book, or it can be more creative/subtle- an example would be "The Measure of Eratosthenes" by Carl Sagan

An excerpt from the passage: " The earth is a place. It is by no means the only place. It is not even a typical place.... In everyday life, such odds are called compelling. Worlds are precious."

This example shows that as the author of your essay, you don't always have to jump right into the sometimes redundant and monontonous steps of a process analysis essay. As Carl Sagan wrote, you can include an introduction, prelude, or anything that you see fit that you think will help further the point of your process essay. As the author, do what you think is best in order to add to your writing, and help your audience understand your purpose and process in your essay.

Looking at examples of process analysis used in essays.
In order to understand what this essay needs, it is important to look at examples and see how authors have written their own process essays.

Example 1: Third World Driving Hints and Tips by P.J. O' Rourke
" Learning to Drive Like A Native" "It's important to understand that in the Third World most driving is done with the horn....There is a precise and complicated etiquette of horn use. Honk your horn under the following circumstances: 1. When anything blocks the road.
2. When anything doesn't.
3. When anything might.
4. At red lights.
5. At green lights.
6. At all other times."

O' Rourke provides clear, simple instructions in this section of his essay. Throughout his essay, he also provides his own style by including some dark humor.

Sharks by Sir Arthur Grimble

" The fisher paddles out in his cockleshell, baits his hook, whether ironwood or steel, with a couple of pounds of almost any kind of offal, lets it hang from amidships on two or three fathoms of line, and drifts waiting for a bite, his club beside him. A big one takes the hook" (pg 386, paragraph 15)

Grimble in this essay shows a personal account of a fishermen hunt for sharks where he lives. He uses his personal experience to explain the process of fishing. He also uses descriptive details along with vivid imagery throughout this passage.

How To Buy A New Car by Clark Howard

" If you choose to buy a car the old-fashioned way, by walking into a dealership and talking with a salesperson, be prepared for a difficult process. Some dealers use a variety of tactics to sanre you. They know you're excited about buying a new car and will use that to their advantage. One strategy they'll employ is delay. Dealers know that the longer they can keep you at the dealership, the more likely you are to buy a car. So they'll try to keep you there for several hours." (pg 285, paragraph 18)

Howard's essay is very specific, clear cut, and to the point, This is an example of a more traditional style of a process analysis essay. He takes the reader step by step and doesn't leave anything out.

The Measure of Eratosthenes by Carl Sagan

" The only possible answer, he saw, was that the surface of the earth is curved. Not only that, the greater the curvature, the greater the difference in the shadow lengths. The sun is so far away that its rays are parallel when they reach the earth. Sticks placed at different angles to the sun's rays cast shadows of different lengths. for the observed difference in the shadow lengths, the distance between Alexandria and Syene had to be about seven degrees along the surface of the earth; that is, if you imagine the sticks extending down the center of the earth, they would intersect there at an angle of seven degrees." ( pg 487-488, paragraph 10)

Sagan's example demonstrates a more scientific, methodical, factual, and statistical view for his essay. He approaches his analysis in a technical way, using data, historical accounts, and mathematics to analyze and honor a Greek thinker.
