My thoughts on the course:

When I first met Jamie, the thing that struck me was how kind and young he was. It didn't look like he was as old as he said, he felt like an old friend after a long time. So I think this course can be interesting.

During the 4 day course, I felt that each day was very interesting, but at the same time I got a little bit stressful and tired. Maybe it's because I really want to do well in every class but I can't answer the questions sometimes.

One of the important things I learn on the course was not to be afraid to make mistakes and to be brave to try. This is Jamie told us. So, I started to try to communicate with people in English.

In the other side, this course is very interesting, each day we learn something different and I think Jamie's unique way of teaching makes me more interesting in listening in class. It was fantastic!

Finally, Jamie said that we are a family and that we can help each other to improve ourselves. I think it's a great learning environment.

I love this family and I want to say that Jamie is the best tutor I have ever met. I hope we all finish our course well in the next few weeks!

Art is what makes people think

Contemporary ‘art activism’ aims to reconstruct the relationship between art and its social foundations and organisations.

In my opinion, the original intention of every artwork is to make people think about the meaning of it, and Tania Bruguera feels the same way.

In Tania's eyes, she feels that she has gone through several changes as an artist. She feels that once people understand what she's doing, it's hard for her to tell them anymore because they don't even need to see it anymore because they already think they know what it is before they see it. All my work is designed to make people think. She believes that the world is becoming more and more simplified in terms of information, so that people can get answers almost without having to think about them, which can lead to laziness or simplicity of thought for many people.

Tania thinks they can create change is Tania believes that all her work is designed to make people think. So in order for them to think, they have to listen with an open mind before they come to their own conclusions. This gives people the space and opportunity to think.

After seeing so much of her art, my opinion is that her work this is somehow like a social experiment. Not the kind of social experiment that manipulates people, I think it's more about the theatre of future opportunities, a future world that people have the chance to practice in advance through art.

For me, JR's work is interesting in that he has always tried to avoid humanising his work by combining painting, photography and other things in a powerful way, but he himself is very low key, he has always remained anonymous, usually appearing in public wearing a hat and sunglasses, emphasising the importance of the artwork rather than the artist himself. His creative process often involves the active participation of community members, inviting local residents to act as models for the work. This collaborative approach enhances the relevance of the work to the site and the public, emphasising its greater social significance.

JR's work revolves around identity and dignity, memory and history, and power and freedom. One of his works that I particularly like is the '28mm' series. This work is one of JR's early masterpieces, including the 'Face to Face' project in the Montfermeil-Clichy area of Paris, which juxtaposed portraits of residents of Israel and Palestine on either side of the separation wall. By juxtaposing portraits of Israeli and Palestinian residents on opposite sides of the separation wall, the art breaks down hostility and calls for peaceful coexistence. The world is in turmoil and people in war-torn countries have no place to live, a problem that society has yet to solve.

JR's approach has always been to uphold the idea that 'the street is the biggest gallery', choosing public spaces such as urban buildings, abandoned sites, slums and neighbourhoods as the stage for his work.

I feel that JR's artwork has spanned many countries and that he has focused on global issues and then continued to push for the integration of art and social justice through his work and creative action strategies. His work has not only changed the physical landscape of cities, but has also created a lasting resonance in people's hearts.

A reflection on this lesson

I like to look at flowers and reflect on them after I've done something.

In today's lesson, our main focus is on learning to listen. A good listening habit and method will help us a lot in our studies.

In my daily life, I usually listen to English songs and watch English films to practice English. I think maybe doing this can improve my listening. However, the results weren't what I was expecting. And the knowledge that can be improved is minimal. But in the lesson, I found out that with Jamie's methods and techniques, I feel that listening is not as difficult for me as it used to be and I feel more understandable.

In this lesson, there was a session that I really enjoyed, where one person described the picture and the other drew it, which I thought was fun and improved my listening without boring.

From now on, I'm going to do more exercises, so that I can understand more conversations.

（Here's one of my favorite shots I've taken recently!）

Padlet story

To tell you the truth, I didn't like Padlet at first, because I think sharing can be done through WeChat or tik tok, but after using it more and more, I found out that Padlet is not only a website to share yourself, but it's also a website to help you learn how to write, you'll be more interested in writing, and not only writing, but also designing your own pictures and colors, so it's a great way to learn how to write. I am starting to like using Padlet.

I've only made five posts so far. My favourite part is my background, for the background of my space I chose an oil painting that looks like spring, with flowers and plants all over the garden. And I will choose a background colour for each of my posts and match it with an image that I think will go well with it. I don't know the word count for each post. How many words I write depends on my ego. It's up to me, so I don't always know how many words I've written. Each post is unique, and two of them explicitly address activism.

I think it's rare for me to be able to make my own decisions because I've always been dyslexic, so I think being able to make my own decisions is a step forward at this point. Nothing motivates me, if it does it must be that I want to continue my studies, I enjoy learning, sometimes I may be tired but when I am learning I am happy. I wanted to experiment, so I decided to share the work with my group members and create a Padlet. When I finish each of my Padlets, I will feel a sense of achievement, I will feel happy, and I will usually feel that I have completed a particularly interesting little essay, which is what I think about when I finish a Padlet!

So far, for Padlet I would like to say two aspects, the first is the advantages of Padlet, Padlet is particularly easy to use, the whole page is very easy to make a very simple, there will be no very complex operation, at the same time in the simple page plasticity is also very strong, personalisation is very prominent, everyone can do belong to their own style of Padlet. And for me, Padlet The good thing about Padlet is that it makes me more interested in the lessons and assignments during this period and I don't feel bored, and I can also make my own Padlet, you know, it's interesting to have a thing with your own imprint.

But the bad thing is also obvious, is that Padlet's social attributes are not strong enough, only the website and also can not use social software login, can not interact with friends, unless you look for friends of Padlet account separately.

In general, when things go well, it's only because I control myself, like every piece of homework that has to be done every day, and every time I've managed to finish my homework before class the next day. But at the same time, there are some things that don't go so well, because there is a saying in China that 'life can't go smoothly, it's the setbacks that will make your life successful', so sometimes when I find that things aren't going well, I don't feel anxious, I will try my best to think of the best way to solve this matter.

When I'm doing the same thing, I usually think about how to do it best, and when I've done something the best way I can, I start thinking about whether there's a better way to do it, and that's what I'm always thinking about. If I could recreate my Padlet, I would have taken my first post more seriously. Redoing something you've done is also a way to improve your skills.

（Here's a shot of the beach I took on film on holiday）

Reflections on writing style

In this study, I learnt a few important points about which times to avoid, how to avoid using ‘I’ and how to use the passive voice.

It is not uncommon for academic writing to encompass a multitude of ideas. As Jamie stated in the classroom, effective communication requires the use of clear, concise language and objective reasoning. To illustrate, consider replacing words such as 'good,' 'big,' and so forth with terms that are more precise and evocative, such as 'get' and 'substantial ideas.'

The first thing I don't think I should do is to minimise the use of the word ‘I’, which carries with it a very strong personal viewpoint, and therefore should be used sparingly. But reflective writing requires the use of ‘I’.

The potential for passivity can make the writing unclear, which is why Jamie advises us to avoid overusing the passive voice.

It is evident that disparate styles facilitate disparate assessments. The utilisation of language serves to circumvent the formulation of absolute statements that are susceptible to refutation. This is my personal understanding of the matter, but it is not a definitive account.

As I work on my project, I will evaluate and rework my project within each element of this framework. This will make my project content more refined and engaging.

In fact, I think the framework is just a formality to give people a very patterned content, which is important, but I prefer to be free to show how much freedom I have for my project.

In my own case, I shall make use of the framework, but not in an exclusive manner.
