Engagement Forum -Educators believe that .."learning is a process of developing understanding by integrating new knowledge into the learner's world of sense and meaning..." "....it changes the focus of assessment from quantity to quality.

It changes our focus from asking 'How many objective questions can the learner answer?' to asking 'How well does the learner understand important concepts, theories and principles?' and 'How expertly can the learner integrate a range of skills into a complex performance?'

Evaluate the proposed claim. Your evaluation must provide your position and your argument

I agree that at university level, we need to encourage students to practice higher order thinking... However, our school education system has 'mould' us into becoming a ROTE LEARNER. In my opinion, our school education system needs a revamp to begin with, if the higher education system is expected to produce outcomes or graduates which is equivalent to world class level.

The other challenge, in my opinion, is our culture itself. Not all teachers/lecturers are open to the concept of students giving out opinion. Usually, it will be perceived as 'rude', at least in the Asian culture, if students are to 'challenge' their teachers with their thoughts. So, I think this is another major barrier to encouraging development of critical thinking among our students

I agree with the proposed statement.

1. By measuring on how well the learners had learn, it reflects how well the courses had been design for them. Taking for example, despite of measuring the understanding of Thermodynamics law from final exam question, it is best to evaluate them from a mini project where the students are able to interpret the law directly.

2. From there onward, it will develop to 'How expertly can the learner integrate a range of skills into a complex performance?' Because now that the learner has come into sense that there's no ideal solution towards a problem. Hence some modification need to be made on that fundamental law/concept.

3.By now the learners will come into sense that all the courses design in the programe is significant with one another.

Learning does not mean the knowledge has to be something new. Learning can lead to understanding to a new perspective of knowledge, skill and appreciation that is useful to the trait of the learner. I agree on the second statement. However, shall educator implement these ('how well...' and 'How expertly...') in highly regimented manners or open, free, natural manners? How does educator strike a balance between industry-driven skills and freedom of knowledge expansion?
