Ben Ratliff defines "transmission" as how emotion is conveyed in order to be perceived by an audience in a musical setting. In other words, the infliction of the tone and how it resonates within you. When you listen to the music, how does it make you feel? Happy? Sorrowful? Livid? That emotion was intentional. It creates a platform for artists to connect with the audience. I one hundred percent agree with this. In my opinion, all good music makes you experience a specific emotion. That emotion changes from song to song, depending upon the musicians intent, but nevertheless it is always there.

Ratliff's Example: "Julia" by The Beatles

Another great example, given by Ratliff himself, is the song "Julia" by The Beatles. This song has such a way of wistfully worming its way into one's heart. This song gives me the feeling of summer love. A sort of airy elegance mixed with raw passion. Ratliff had a slightly different perception of the song, stating that "He's [John Lennon] giving what he's got, to whomever he meant it for-- his mother, his girlfriend, a fusion of the two. And he is understanding what he has to give, using his humility, real or simulated.", but he still had the same relative point. Emotions were felt by the audience in response to the stimulus created by the musician(s) which the common population calls music.

My Example: "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam

Take the song "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam for example. The sadness and grief portrayed within the lyrics and wavering of vocalist Eddie Vedder's voice as he relays his sorrows contrasts with the steady and relatively optimistic tune the instruments add to this piece, highlighting his strife for meeting her in heaven after he dies. The emotion portrayed in this piece brings me to tears every time I hear it, leading me to consider it a grade A example of transmission by Ratliff's definition. As Ratliff himself stated, “…there is an extreme form of emotion in music that transcends specific moods. I’ll call it a state of transmission.”
