Residential schools were the government's answer to improve Indigenous education, however it was a complete failure. The education system which was made to better educate Indigenous children in order for their culture and society grow was an awful experience. Today the Indigenous population are still struggling with this trauma.

Residential schools were built off reserve increasing the distance between the children and their family's. Considering Indigenous people were already living in poverty this created a large a problem. The families were unable to go to their children as in many cases they were provinces away. The system had total control over the Indigenous lives. 150,000 First Nation, Inuit, and Metis children were removed from there communities and had limited opportunities for a normal family life.

If brothers and sisters attended the same school they rarely saw each other as boys and girls were separated.

During the 10 months of school the children stayed away from their parents.

Parents were told that their children would get the same education as the general population in the public system however that was not the case. Teachers were unqualified as some had not graduated high school themselves. The students spent little time in class and worked the rest of the time doing house keeping and general maintenance for the school since the school was underfunded. Most students by the age of 18 had only reached a grade 5 level education. <del>

</del>

Males primary school focus was to farm, and wood working.

Females primary school focus was to clean, cook, and do laundry.

A system that was responsible for educating and caring for Indigenous children created generations of individuals not knowing were they belong.
