What Guidelines Do Students Violate Often?

The most common ethical guidelines broken are commandments #6 and #8 (using/copying software/work you have not paid for). Students often look for ways to get materials for classes such as books and programs for free, rather than paying for them, so they commit piracy.

The other most common broken commandment is #10, where people use computers (including phones), to write harmful material about others and for causes that do not benefit anyone in a positive or respectful manner.

Why Do I Think Students Violate Commandments?

I believe students violate commandments #6 and #8 simultaneously because of the increased cost of education, and many products and materials cost much more money than they should. Sometimes students can be expected to spend thousands of dollars on books they might never use even if their money situation is dire.

Why students violate commandment #10 is due to university culture, and how most students find it acceptable to post disrespectful material about professors and students alike, which benefits none.

What Can Be Done to Reduce/Eliminate Such Unethical Behavior?

What should be done to eliminate such unethical behavior in relation to commandment #6 and #8 is for faculty to use materials that are for the student's benefit at a reasonable cost. For example, some professors require students to pay high prices for books they have wrote regardless of the educational benefit of reading such book. Additionally, the University can do more to teach students about the power of using a library correctly, as well as databases. Lastly, students should be made aware of the implications of piracy and the dangers.

What can be done about the violation of commandment #10 is there should be more moderation surrounding anonymous student posting boards which encourage harmful material to be posted under the safety net of anonymity. Also, students should be briefed on the consequences of posting such material and how it affects the receivers.
