NIYYAH, AMAL, and EHSAN

In Islam, the foundation of every act of worship begins with the heart. This foundation is built on Niyyah (intention) a deep, honest purpose in the heart to do something purely for the sake of Allah. It is not something we say aloud, but something we feel internally. Niyyah gives meaning to our actions, turning even the smallest deed into a form of worship when it’s done sincerely for Allah.

Following intention comes Amal (action). These are the deeds we physically carry out such as praying, fasting, giving charity, or being kind to others. Amal should be guided by the right intention. Without sincere niyyah, our actions may look good on the outside, but they may lack true value in the sight of Allah. Amal completes what Niyyah begins.

Then there is Ehsan (excellence) the highest level of spiritual consciousness in worship. Ehsan means performing every act of worship with full awareness, love, and respect, as though you are standing in front of Allah. Even if you cannot see Him, you are fully mindful that He sees you at all times. Ehsan transforms ordinary worship into something beautiful and meaningful.

EXAMPLE:

Niyyah: Before starting Salah (prayer), you quietly intend in your heart that you are praying only for the sake of pleasing Allah.

Amal: You then perform the prayer correctly, following all the steps with focus and humility.

Ehsan: While praying, you strive to be fully aware that Allah is watching you, which helps you stay sincere and focused.

CONCLUSION:

These three Niyyah, Amal, and Ehsan work together to shape a Muslim’s worship and daily life. Intention gives purpose, action brings it to life, and excellence adds depth and beauty. Practicing all three helps us grow closer to Allah and improve our character both spiritually and morally.

VIRTUES FOUND IN SALAH WITH KHUSHU

When a person performs salah with true khushu’ (humility and full concentration), it brings many beautiful values into their life. These virtues not only improve the quality of worship, but also shape a stronger, more disciplined character.

At-Ta’ah (Obedience to Allah)

Khushu’ teaches us to obey Allah sincerely following His command to pray without hesitation or complaint. This obedience reflects in all areas of life, not just in worship. When we submit fully to Allah, our actions become more sincere and purposeful.

Al-Jihad (Spiritual Struggle)

Maintaining khushu’ requires fighting off distractions, laziness, and wandering thoughts. This constant effort is a type of inner jihad a spiritual struggle to stay connected to Allah during prayer. It shows strength and determination in one’s faith.

Muhasabah (Self-Reflection)

Through khushu’, we are encouraged to reflect deeply on our actions, thoughts, and intentions. We learn to examine the quality of our prayers making sure they are filled with sincerity, not just empty movements. This habit helps us grow spiritually.

Al-Ifah (Preserving One’s Dignity)

When we pray with khushu’, it strengthens our sense of honour and self-respect. It helps us resist sinful desires and stay away from immoral behaviour. A heart connected to Allah is less likely to fall into wrong actions, and more likely to remain dignified.

Let our prayers shape us into better individuals sincere, focused, obedient, and dignified servants of Allah.

True khushu’ brings true transformation

VIRTUES FOUND IN SAWN

Fasting (Sawm) is not just about abstaining from food and drink it is a powerful act of worship that shapes our soul, behaviour, and relationship with Allah SWT. When practiced sincerely, fasting brings out important virtues that guide us toward becoming better Muslims.

1. Spiritual Purification (Tazkiyah al-Nafs)

Fasting helps to cleanse the heart from negative traits such as pride, greed, and anger. By withholding from worldly desires, we give our soul the chance to become purified and more in control.

	•	It trains us to avoid sinful actions and helps us grow in self-control.

	•	During this time, we strengthen our bond with Allah by engaging in acts of ibadah like prayer, Qur’an recitation, and constant dhikr (remembrance) of Allah.

	•	This spiritual detox allows our heart to become more sincere and focused on pleasing our Creator.

2. Self-Discipline and Patience

One of the greatest lessons of fasting is sabr (patience). Throughout the day, we are tested with hunger, thirst, and the urge to react emotionally yet we hold ourselves back out of obedience to Allah.

	•	This builds inner strength, teaching us to resist temptations and to stay calm and composed.

	•	Fasting trains our character to become more disciplined in both speech and actions, even outside the month of Ramadan.

	•	We learn how to manage our emotions, control our desires, and act with restraint and humility.

Let our fasting be more than just a physical practice let it be a journey of the heart that transforms our soul, strengthens our discipline, and draws us nearer to Allah SWT.

VIRTUES FOUND IN HAJJ

Participating in the pilgrimage of Hajj or even the lesser pilgrimage, Umrah, symbolizes a believer’s readiness to give up worldly comforts and desires purely for the sake of pleasing Allah. This sacred act is not just a ritual but a profound spiritual commitment that mirrors the unwavering obedience shown by Prophet Ibrahim A.S. He was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son, an act that represents the highest form of submission and devotion to the Divine will. This moment in history is deeply commemorated during Hajj and teaches Muslims the virtue of prioritizing God's command over personal attachments.

Demonstration of Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

Undertaking the journey of Hajj or Umrah also highlights the importance of developing taqwa a state of being constantly aware of Allah’s presence. This heightened awareness encourages individuals to live righteously and to stay away from actions that displease Allah. The rituals performed during Hajj are designed to help pilgrims purify their hearts and improve their character by reminding them of the importance of living a disciplined and moral life.

Spiritual Discipline through Ihram

One example of this discipline is the state of Ihram, which every pilgrim must enter before performing the pilgrimage rites. In this sacred state, pilgrims are required to wear simple clothing and abstain from specific actions and behaviors, including arguments, vanity, and using scented products. This process instills self-control, humility, and reflection, helping believers to focus entirely on their spiritual connection with Allah rather than worldly distractions.

An Important Reminder for All Ages

It is essential to remember that Hajj and Umrah are not acts of worship that are only meant for the elderly. These journeys are obligations that can be fulfilled once a person is physically and financially able. Since no one knows the exact moment of their death, one should not delay or assume they will have the opportunity later in life. Preparing early and sincerely intending to perform these pilgrimages is a sign of faith and devotion.

VIRTUES FOUN IN ZAKAH

Purification of Wealth and Soul

Zakah, which is the obligatory act of giving a portion of one’s wealth to those in need, serves as a powerful spiritual cleanser. It purifies both our income and our inner selves from the negative effects of greed, selfishness, and material attachment. By giving Zakah, a Muslim acknowledges that true ownership belongs to Allah alone, and wealth is merely a temporary trust given to us. This act cultivates a sense of gratitude and detachment from worldly possessions, reminding us that our ultimate reliance should be on Allah, not on wealth or material success.

Developing Social Unity and Compassion

The act of charity, especially during blessed times such as the month of Ramadan, strengthens the bonds between members of society. It fosters mutual support and emotional connection, as it bridges the gap between the wealthy and the poor. Giving Zakah nurtures a spirit of empathy and generosity. It encourages individuals to be aware of the hardships of others and to be active in alleviating their struggles.

Promoting Acts of Kindness and Awareness of Others

Zakah plays a major role in nurturing kindness and encouraging believers to look beyond themselves and into the lives of the underprivileged. It introduces us to people we may have otherwise overlooked and teaches us the importance of collective well-being. Through this practice, Muslims become more aware of their responsibility to help and uplift their communities.

Reference to the Qur'an

This profound teaching is emphasized in the Qur’an, particularly in Surah Az-Zalzalah (Chapter 99), verses 7 and 8, which state:

"So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it."

These verses serve as a strong reminder that every good action, no matter how small, is recognized and rewarded by Allah.

Conclusion

Zakah and acts of charity are not merely financial duties they are deeply spiritual actions that purify the soul, promote justice, and strengthen our faith. Through sincere giving, we cleanse our hearts of arrogance and selfishness, and we build unwavering trust in Allah’s promise that every righteous deed will be rewarded in this life and the Hereafter.
