Athletic trainers work with people of all ages and skill levels, from young children to professional athletes. 

Athletic trainers are typically one of the first healthcare providers on the scene when injuries occur. 

They may work under the direction of a licensed physician and with other health care providers. 

Athletic trainers are different from fitness trainers and personal trainers

Personal trainers develop fitness programs usually to help the physical fitness of their client, on the other hand, an athletic trainer prevents and treats injuries.

Athletic trainers need at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree programs are also common. In school the degree programs include science and health related courses such as biology, anatomy, physiology, and nutrition.

• In high school, if you’re interested in pursuing a career in athletic training courses you should take include anatomy, physiology, and physics.

Important qualities of an athletic trainer include the following

• Compassion: Trainers work with athletes and patients who may be in great pain. They must be sympathetic while providing treatment.
• Decisionmaking skills: Athletic trainers must be able to make informed clinical decisions that could affect the health or livelihood of the patient. 
• Detail oriented: If you are detail oriented and want to go into health care this could be a good career for you. Athletic trainers must record patients progress accurately and ensure that they are receiving the appropriate treatments.

Licenses/Certification/Registration

Nearly all states require athletic trainers to be licensed or certified ; requirements vary by state.

In north carolina, to hold a job with the title of athletic trainer you must be licensed by the NC board of Athletic trainer examiners

Medical terminology is pretty important as an athletic trainer. This career isn’t specialized towards a specific part of the body so you’ll need to be versatile in your knowledge of the body.

A current trend in this field is Shockwave therapy. In the United States, using shockwave therapy to treat chronic injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, is well known but still relatively new when employed to treat acute injuries such as sprains, muscle pulls and over extensions. In the past, many professional athletes have sought out shockwave therapy to recover from injuries as opposed to using cortisone shots or more traditional treatments. 
Shockwave therapy has been effective for one-time treatment of strains and sprains as well as multiple treatments for chronic injuries. Mr. Haselhorst says shockwave therapy could become more popular in the United States as it becomes available for a wider range of patients.

If you’re working for a popular sports team confidentiality is super important. Negligence is also an issue that arises. In 2014 a jv football player felt a pop in his right ankle after he was tackled. An athletic trainer examined the player's ankle. The trainer found no bruising, no deformities, and after taping the player's ankle, had him move around a bit. The player said he felt fine and then was cleared to return to the game, however he injured himself even more. Many athletic trainers work in educational settings, such as colleges, universities, elementary schools, and secondary schools. Others work in hospitals, fitness centers, or physicians’ offices, or for professional sports teams. Athletic trainers may spend their time working outdoors on sports fields in all types of weather.

Most athletic trainers work full time.  When working with a sports team, an ATC may log upwards of 50-70 hours (including nights and weekends) per week when in season while traveling with the team. An ATC not working with a team may have a more established schedule of 40-50 hours per week with nights and weekends off.

Job growth is 21% : this is much faster than the average for all occupations. As people become more aware of sports-related injuries at a young age, demand for athletic trainers is expected to increase.

During cardiac surgery, the surgeon needs to work on a still heart, and it is necessary to temporarily replace the patient’s circulatory and respiratory function. It is the responsibility of the perfusionist, a specialized healthcare professional, to assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during these medical procedures.

The perfusionist manages the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart. It is also the perfusionist responsibility to deliver the drug that stops the heart.

The perfusionist needs to know the patient’s medical history and current health status. Before the surgery begins, the perfusionist and the surgeon will determine which circulation equipment and techniques will be used.

In the operating room, the perfusionist prepares the heart-lung machine and other critical equipment necessary for the particular operation and verifies its functionality. Perfusionists typically complete a four-year degree, with courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, as well as additional specialized training to satisfy the requirements of certification. 

Accredited perfusion programs offer master’s or bachelor’s degrees.

applicants complete an accredited training program in cardiovascular perfusion and perform a minimum of 75 cases as the primary perfusionist during training to sit for the certification exam. Recertification, including continuing education and work experience, is required on an annual basis.

Since perfusionists work in the operating room and use life-sustaining equipment, they must be able to handle acute stress, perform under severe pressure and pay great attention to detail. Some surgeries can go on for many hours, requiring a high level of mental and physical endurance.

Perfusionists also must keep pace with newest technological changes and continually upgrade their skills and adapt to the latest developments in the profession.

Employment of speech-language pathologists is projected to grow 21 percent from 2014 to 2024. Increased awareness of speech and language disorders, such as stuttering, in younger children should lead to a need for more speech-language pathologists who specialize in treating that age group. Also, an increasing number of pathologists will be needed to work with children with autism to improve their ability to communicate and socialize effectively.
