In college, Melvin got drafted to become an NFL Player for the Detroit Lions. This shows how he was able to balance his studies while also playing football very nicely that he made it into the NFL. Another way he was hardworking is when he was studying science in his college years to become an astronaut. He worked very hard so that he got selected to become an astronaut. So when he finally became an astronaut, he also worked very hard to train so that he could finally go into space. Leland Melvin never gave up when he faced obstacles. For example, when Leland Melvin first played football he was very good. When he started playing in the NFL, everything was fine, but then he suffered a severe injury. While he was playing football, he severely pulled his hamstring. This caused his football career to end. Now, instead of sulking and thinking that his whole life is ruined because of this injury, he decided to switch his career. He then started to rely on becoming an astronaut as his new career. Another example is when Melvin was in his NASA astronaut training. He was going into a ten foot pool to train and prepare for spacewalking and he realized that his Valsava Pad (a pad that clears a divers ear and helps their ears adapt to increasing pressure while underwater) was missing. He didn't want to delay his training, so he told the other astronauts and the test director, Greg Sims, that he doesn't need it. Once he went deep underwater, he started to feel a pain and he couldn't hear very well. It all turned out that his eardrums were pushed too far back and he became temporarily deaf. This didn't cause him to stop training to become an astronaut. He still didn't give up and continued to become an astronaut. All these pieces of evidence show his journey of his big career change whether it was a good part of his journey or a bad part.
