The Grievances of Puerto Rican Teachers

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the American territory of Puerto Rico proposed significant changes to the island’s education system. The school systems of the island have, in the past, have faced poor student outcomes, outdated facilities, and underpaid staff (which all suck pretty bad). However, Hurricane Maria has left the island with even bigger fish to fry. The American born secretary of the island, Julia Keleher, is seen by teachers as using the chaos and upheaval of Hurricane Maria to close schools and introduce privatization to the island’s school system through charter schools and vouchers. As discussed in class, vouchers are tax dollar money that pay for students to attend public institutions that are redirected to private institutions if a student so chooses to attend. Many of the island's teachers are upset with the Kelcher, of whom is from the mainland, making decisions for the island. They are also upset with the island's governor, Ricardo Rosello, of whom they claim is a sellout for, 'selling what's left of the country.' Teachers also fear that new reforms will call for the mass firing of teachers. Also, the fact that these new reforms will be made WITHOUT teacher input. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Taking Advantage of Devastation

The government of Puerto Rico in collusion with American government are just using Hurricane Maria as an excuse to push new education reforms that they most likely had in the works for several years. Not enough was being done to fix the public school system when it was already clearly broken yet thousands of dollars are being funneled in to the privatization of the school system.

Teachers United

After reading the second chapter of the book, there are multiple avenues that the teachers can take to lead to success. The first is utilizing social media and making the mainstream American media aware of their plight. Many people forgot about Hurricane Maria in the aftermath of hurricane season but a country can't just flip a switch and return to their normal state. It has to work its way there. Like a wise man by the name if Finnick Odair once said, 'It easier to fall apart than it is to put yourself back together.' Another method they could use is forming a teacher's union that prevents them from unjustified termination, makes sure they are decently paid, regulates hours, and more. A third is involving the community and working in tandem with parents and students and presenting a united front. That way, those in charge know that they are going to be hit from all fronts when it comes to their issues.
