         <title>1837 Flour Riots</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After the Great Fire of 1835, there was a food shortage and prices jumped up, two companies were then accused of hoarding flour all for themselves.&nbsp;Citizens attacked and stole the food from the factory companies. <br><br>Significance- This was significant because it was one of the first if not the first demonstration that showed the division between the wealthy class and the lower class. &nbsp;Showed that people who produced food could not even buy necessities. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1840 Lowell Mill Girls</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1840 New England town mills began to recruit and hire 13 to 14 year old girls as employers to do things such as sew or operate the loom. These women worked about 13 hours a week and were paid next to nothing.&nbsp;<br><br>The Significance of this is that this put women's working rights in motion and created the first union of working women. &nbsp;One of the first opportunities for women to get a job. Broke trends of domesticity. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1869 Knights of Labor</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A man named Uriah Stephans was a Tailor and he wanted to organize a strike for higher wages, a local tailor union had just failed so Uriah got them together and formed the Knights of labor which started off as just Tailors and grew from there to everybody from coal miners to railroads.<br><br>This was significant because it was the first major worker organization, and it paved the way for the eight-hour workday and social and cultural uplift for workers.&nbsp;First all-inclusive unionization of workers. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1886 there was a normal protest for laborer rights, then someone threw a bomb at the police and this protest turned into a riot with 8 people dying and 8 extreme activists getting convicted.&nbsp;<br><br>The Haymarket riot's significance was to mark a huge setback for labor activists because this violence discouraged more demonstrations and nearly halted the labor movement for decades.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>1892 Homestead Strike</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Many workers were laid off of their job at a local steel plant so they performed a strike against the steel plant that got violent. Armed security guards were then sent in to break up the strike and protect the steel plant. This resulted in 16 deaths and many injuries.&nbsp;<br><br>The significance of this was a message to strikers that if strikes get bad then armed guards can be sent in to break it up, possibly killing them. Because of that another impact of this was that steel striking was set back for about 26 years and it demoralized many steel unions.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>1894 Pullman Strike</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1892 there was a railroad company owned by George Pullman and he had just cut the already strikingly low wages of his employees by 25%. Due to this many families were starving and they had no money so workers walked off the job and performed a railroad strike, stopping a large portion of railroad traffic, and also destroying railroad property. <br><br>The impact of the Pullman strike was that railroad companies lost about a million dollars because they started to only hire nonunion workers. Also to break up the strike the U.S government used an injunction and put in place labor day to honor the labor activists movement.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

She organized hundreds of strikes including the Great Railroad strike of 1877 and ones that led to the Haymarket riots.&nbsp;Also, she pushed for child labor laws, and used a lot of her fame and status to push these issues. <br><br>The major significances of mother Jones was that she founded the social democratic party, helped to found the IWW, and uplift spirits and hopes for change in the workforce.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Fire</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In a Triangle-Shirtwaist factory many women worked on a certain part of the place, and many safety regulations were not followed during the day-to-day week so one day when the factory caught on fire those people were trapped up there with nothing to do but jump or burn.&nbsp;<br><br>The impact of this is that it forced the signing of a bill which investigated employment rules for women and children, fire safety, factory inspection, and sanitation. in 1912 there was also 25 new laws that changed labor protections. Finally, this tragedy also contributed to creating the Occupational Safety and Health Act. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1921 Battle for Blair Mountain</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There were disputes between coal miners and the coal companies because of low wages, not good tools, and terrible safety conditions. Coal companies then fired many unionized workers because they were doing demonstrations. Eventually, this led up to one side the coal miners who were armed, and another side the police and sheriffs in a skirmish-like war.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;Significance- The significance of this was that coal miners became a shortage to find for UMW, raised awareness for the horrible conditions that miners worked in, and finally changed the way that unions demonstrated so that they didn't break the law. </div>]]></description>

This was not taken seriously and in response to that about 13,000 Air-traffic controllers went on a strike. Ronald Reagan ordered anybody who didn't return to work in 48-hours to be fired, as a result 11,359 Air traffic controllers were fired.&nbsp;<br><br>The significance of this was showing labor class people that the government had power over them and how powerful the president was. </div>]]></description>
