After the Battle of Quebec, the Continental Army was left defeated and retreated. Britain saw this as an opportunity to isolate the colonies and finally prove to them that The Crown ruled over all and to do this they decided they needed control over the Hudson river and upstate New York. The First Battle of Saratoga ended with the British troops pushing the Americans back however, the British suffered twice the casualties than the Americans which prevented them from continuing. The Second Battle of Saratoga was a success for the Americans because the British troops were outnumbered and were forced to face the elements which left them without supplies or options causing them to surrender. During the summer of 1780, the French were helping the Americans against the British and decided that the best plan of action would be faking a stay in New York while everyone else would be in the South preparing to take Yorktown. In September 1781, the American and French troops had arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia while the British had built 10 redoubts in one of the Yorktown ports. Once they had dug their trenches, they started firing at the British and managed to bring down most of the British’s artillery. It was decided that the French would later take out redoubt No. 9 and Alexander Hamilton’s team would take out redoubt No. 10 with bayonets and as much silence as possible. The siege was successful and with the British surrounded and out of options, they were forced to surrender on October 19, 1781. On June 16, 1775, the Americans heard that the British were going to send troops from Boston to occupy the surrounding hills, prompting the patriots to build fortifications on top of Breed’s Hill. After this, the British closed in on Breed’s Hill and the Americans prepared to fight even though they had little ammunition. Unfortunately, they were outnumbered and had run low on supplies, forcing them to retreat. In the end, the patriots suffered 400 casualties but this was better than the 1000 British casualties. The Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and Townshend Acts had already enraged the colonists and the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party proved this to the King causing him to declare that Massachusetts was in open rebellion. On April 18, 1775, Joseph Warren who was part of the Sons of Liberty learned that the British were going to march to Concord that night. Paul Revere and William Dawes were prompted to go separately on horseback to warn patriot troops about the approaching British. When the 700 British troops arrived in Lexington, they met 77 American militiamen but the firing started when a shot rang out which prompted the fighting to commence although no one knows who that shot belonged to.  Soon the British started retreating to safety with the Americans following closely behind and the British were successful in getting to cover. After several British victories in Charleston and Camden, South Carolina, the British decided to move their troops into North Carolina. Major Ferguson and his group of loyalists eventually settled on King’s Mountain and prepared to fire but failed to prepare a defense. The patriots however, decided to surround the ridge. Eventually, the loyalists were forced into a small area on the north side of the ridge. After Ferguson’s death on horseback in an attempt to break out, the group surrendered to the patriots, securing an American victory.
