The Vikings came from three countries of Scandinavia: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The name 'Viking' comes from a language called 'Old Norse' and means 'a pirate raid'. People who went off raiding in ships were said to be 'going Viking'.

The Viking age in European history was about AD 700 to 1100. During this period many Vikings left Scandinavia and travelled to other countries, such as Britain and Ireland. Some went to fight and steal treasure. Others settled in new lands as farmers, craftsmen or traders.

The creation of the Earth is closely tied to the formation of the solar system about five billion years ago. The solar system condensed from a huge cloud of gas and dust, with the Sun forming as part of the cloud collapsed in on itself under the influence of gravity to the point where nuclear fusion could begin. The Sun’s gravitational field attracted large amounts of material, which formed a disc-shaped structure around it, known as an accretion disc. The Earth, like the other planets, was created around 4.54 billion years ago when some of the material from this disc came together to form a spherical body. At some point early in its history, it is thought that a smaller planet collided with this body, increasing its size and resulting in the formation of the Moon.

How did the work of children change during the Industrial Revolution?

Child Labor. During the Industrial Revolution, it was common for children to work in factories, mines, and other industrial occupations. Children as young as four commonly worked. Among families in extreme poverty, it was expected that childrenwork in order to help the family out.

Britain was the first country in the world to have lots of factories. Factory machines made all kinds of things. Machines did jobs, such as spinning, previously been done by families at home. ... People had to shout above the rattle and hiss of machinery

The idea for a woman’s neighbourhood house came from the City of Northcote Recreation Policy 1983.    The Policy identified that there was little support for women in the community, whether they be newly arrived migrants or stay at home mums.  Any funding for recreation was focused primarily on funding male dominated sporting groups.

After investigation the City of Northcote felt the best way forward in engaging both women and the increasingly multicultural growth of the area was the establishment of a Women’s Neighbourhood House.   It was to be a service by women for women.

In 1985 the City of Northcote and the State Government jointly purchased a property at 131 Shaftsbury Parade Thornbury for use as a neighbourhood house.  The neighbourhood house was officially opened on 7 December 1985.
