In studying this week about the demographics at my current school, I found this article. I posted it under decision making because it made me wonder. It is summer and the hiring process is in full swing. When interviewing and having candidates of different races apply do leaders put enough thought and attention into hiring individuals that meet the ethnic breakdown of their schools? My current school has a high Hispanic population but only 2 Hispanic teachers. Would hiring more help with the problems we are currently facing with attendance, drop out rates, and test scores?

Kathy, Great article! I found it not only insightful but also it hit close to home for me as well. I currently work at a school that is about 50/50 Hispanics and African-Americans, but our teacher population does not mirror that. We currently have 4 Hispanic teachers and 4 African- American teachers, and the rest of our school is made up of Caucasian teachers. I do feel it is important for students to see themselves in their teachers, to know that they are alike in some way. It gives students a sense of belonging and a want to be present with others that are like them. I do think that it is difficult for administrators to take into account race and cultural background when hiring staff because of time. If an administrator only has a week to hire a person for the position, and they meet all of the qualifications except they are Caucasian, it would be hard for an administrator to pass up the opportunity to fill the position. I think there is a lot of red tape as far as discrimination and how things might look to others on the outside of education that make the powers that be hesitate when it comes to having staff mirror the student population. It is definitely something to seriously think about for our future.
