This was clearly portrayed in Guy De Maupassant’s 1884 short story “The Necklace”. The Necklace portrays dissatisfaction with what a person has until this brings him/her demise. The story revolves around the main character, Mathilde, feeling that she deserved a better life and dreaming of living lavishly and her husband, M. Loisel (clerk in the Ministry of Education) trying to make her happy by bringing her an invitation to an event in the ministry and then buying her a dress and allowing her to borrow a necklace.
