NHS 111 Press 2 to launch in North Wales

We’re very pleased to share that next Wednesday (18 January), we will launch a dedicated mental health advice service, offering support for people of all ages via the established NHS 111 call number.

Those who are concerned about their own mental health or that of a loved one will be able to call 111 and select option 2 to speak to one of our dedicated wellbeing practitioners.

The 111 Press 2 service will initially be available from 08.30 – 23:00, seven days a week, before operating on a 24/7 basis from the end of March 2023, once additional staff have been recruited and trained.

The number is free to call from a landline or mobile, even when the caller has no credit left, but in life threatening situations, people should always call 999 or attend their nearest Emergency Department (A&E).

If you need support to live independently and want take charge of your own life, it’s worth considering direct payments.

With direct payments, your local council pays you an agreed amount into your bank account instead of arranging your care and support plan itself. You then use this money to achieve what matters to you in the way you choose.

As a direct payments user, you decide who supports you and when they support you, giving you far greater flexibility and choice about how your lead your life.

Who can get direct payments?

Direct payments can be made to:

adults and young people over 16 who can make decisions for themselves
a person with parental responsibility for a

disabled child
a

disabled parent

who needs support to care for their child/children
carers
aged 16 or over
a person who is unable to make their own decisions (payments are made to a suitable person*).

The Conwy and Denbighshire Youth Justice Service work with young people providing a range of intervention programmes some of which, result from court orders that young people engage subsequent to anti-social/offending behaviour.

The YJS also offers support to victims of youth crime and anti-social behaviour and a range of restorative interventions are offered. The YJS has developed a prevention project which aims to intervene with young people at an earlier stage in order to prevent entry into the criminal justice system.

Free Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Training

Free training is being offered to help people better support those struggling with mental health difficulties.

We are encouraging people across North Wales to sign up for the iCAN Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Training, which has been developed by our mental health professionals. We are the first Health Board in Wales to make such training widely available, free of charge.

The half-day training course provides an overview of common mental health problems as well as best practice guidance on how to listen, give helpful advice, and look after your own mental health and wellbeing.

It is being delivered by Pwllheli based charity, Felin Fach, which is one of a number of third sector organisations we commission to deliver iCAN Hubs across the region, which can be accessed on a drop in basis.
