Sound/music activity

Summary

Doggy Doggy is a sound game that involves children hiding a squeaky bone behind someone's back. The game is about guessing who stole their bone by listening to the noise. While the bone is hidden behind a classmate's back the children sing “doggy, doggy, who has got your bone? Someone stole it from your home." When the children say “wake up doggy, who has your bone?” This is the cue for the doggy in the middle to open their eyes and take three guesses about who has the bone. The child can squeeze the bone, causing it to squeak, hinting to the the child the location of the sound.

Drama

Summary:

This collaborative group time will be conducted at pick up time as the children are settling down to go home. To begin I will talk to the children about what animals and how they think they move and dance. I will use the Wadawurrung language that we have learn to see if they can remember the animals based off there the Wadawurrung names. If they believe they know what it is they can jump up and do the animal actions. After this recap of our Wadawurrung language, I will narrate and dramatise the story of five cheeky monkeys who got eaten by a crocodile. I will do this by using facial expressions, sounds and body actions. I will encourage the children to join in and sing “five cheeky monkeys swinging in a tree, teasing mister crocodile you can't catch me, you can’t catch me. Along came mister crocodile as quite as can be and snap! Right out of the tree.

This game was a success and the children really enjoyed playing with each other. As expected the children understood how the game worked, as we explained how to play step by step. I did not expect the children in the middle to peak and therefor guess who had the bone. On reflection I would provide a blanket so that the Doggy in the middle cannot see where the bone ended up. In my future practice I would expand on this by potentially using different objects, such as a shaker or tap sticks. By using Tap sticks next time I believe this will be a great way to incorporate indigenous perspective.

Based on the experience of walking through nature and moving my body, I created a movement session using a ukulele party. Children will dance and move their bodies with educators and instruments, allowing them to express movement in whatever ways they feel.

As Dr. Ibrahim Baltagi said music can help grow many areas of a child's “development and skills” to prepare them for “school readiness”(UNICEF, 2019). Furthermore, in addition to the preparation it can give children for school it is also an excellent way to "help children express themselves and share feelings".(UNICEF, 2019).

On my country walk, I was surrounded by so many trees creating drama. Having heard the trees swish and sway up above, I based this learning experience on the popular song of five cheeky monkeys swinging in trees. It involves children pretending to be monkeys swinging in trees that I imagine to be similar to the trees I saw.

One of the ways we can keep children’s “freedom” is by allowing them to continually play in many different aspects of their lives. From Victor Wooten's Ted talk I was really moved by his experience of children losing their passion for music, as learning an instrument was no longer fun. The passion and belief that "freedom becomes lost" as we grow and learn from Victor Wooten is what I heard and considered when deciding to do this learning experience.

When exploring nature in assessment task two I heard and felt the bellow of an Emu. Imaged how the traditional owners of the land would of heard similar sounds and how their listening would of been extremely fine tuned to live a hunting and gathering lifestyle. The emu's bellow that I heard was such a unique and intriguing sound in nature. From this experience I decided to play a game with the children that involves animals and sounds. This game was perfect as like on my nature walk I had to listen for the bellowing. This is like how children have to listen for where the “dogs” bone is squeaking from.

Another reason I chose to play this game with the children is because Pauline Olivers said “listening deeply” can “enhance the quality of life” (2015). Despite the fact that the children are not listening to the sounds of the environment or music around them. I believe the children have to “learn to listen in a new way”(2015) just like Pauline stated that she had to do.
