Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” is a powerful declaration of resilience, empowerment, and defiance. Through her words, Angelou speaks to the enduring strength of marginalized people, particularly women and Black individuals, in the face of oppression, adversity, and prejudice. Her repetition of the phrase “I rise” throughout the poem serves as a mantra of resistance and survival, and it deeply resonates with me on a personal level. “Still I Rise” is a celebration of personal and collective empowerment. It’s a call to rise above negativity, to be unapologetically yourself, and to never let anything or anyone hold you down. The poem’s timeless message encourages us all to remember our worth and continue to rise, no matter the circumstances.
