There are a few different competencies that I believe students should have for media literacy. The first is understanding the formats of the media. These students need to be able to see the different types and formats in how information is able to be gained or presented. If kids don't know how to receive information, how are they going to find the right information?

The next thing is critical thinking. They should be able to look through information and be able to tell what is credible and what isn't, there is so much out there in the media you have to be able to tell who is credible and telling the facts and who is just putting out their own information.

The next is being able to analyze information. It is important for kids to be able to look at many different sources and combine them all together to get the best information possible. I know for me it's important to have more than just one source because it makes you more credible and more sure of the information you are looking for.

One thing is the flat earth theory. There are many people who still believe that the earth is flat. The truth is that the earth is round and there has been much proof surrounding this from people going into space and taking photos and just the way the world works with daylight and season changes. According to popsci there are many different ways to prove that the earth is round. The shadows of the moon, following ships on the horizon, looking at the stars how there is a curvature, also being up high in a plane or on top of a mountain you can see the curvature of the sky, seeing other planets and their shapes because they are all round so why would the earth be different. It's really not logical to think that the earth is flat. https://www.popsci.com/10-ways-you-can-prove-earth-is-round/

For me this is concerning because there are some celebrities on TV and on their social media who say that they believe the earth is flat. One example is NBA all star Kyrie Irving. There are many young kids who believe everything he says because they like him, so when they hear him and other people saying it, naturally they are going to believe it too. A way to help with this is having the kids have the ability to critically think. They have to be able to think for themselves and research and understand that they can't just listen to one small portion of media, we could teach them this by encouraging them to research for themselves.

The next thing is AI. There are many myths and concerns about AI taking away jobs and robots taking over humanity. A lot of people worry about this and that they are never going to be able to be the same or have other different opportunities. When in reality according to irfoundation.org AI will actually help the majority of countries and will help people have more opportunities to get jobs. They shared an example with a chart with different colors and the ones with lots of pink will be benefited, and every country had a good amount of pink.

https://wrp.lrfoundation.org.uk/publications/a-digital-world-perceptions-of-risk-from-ai-and-misuse-of-personal-data?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw3624BhBAEiwAkxgTOlZLuXaddxC0YQpMona_4y3PMHPPctsSuQWSe0rsdxqLuPRlcsp6zxoCLD0QAvD_BwE

This one as well could be bad for kids because there may be news articles and a lot of tik tok and instagram that may be sharing their own opinions and videos about the fears of AI and it can take away some of their motivation to be what they want to be and make them scared. Its important for us to teach them what a credible source would be. If they know what are reliable sources and what aren't, then they can be able to distinguish what is true and what is just an opinion.
