Henry Ford's Legacy Today/ Changing the World of Business

One of the ways that Henry Ford left his legacy behind for future generations was selling his first automobile, the Model T. After combining Ford Manufacturing with Ford Motor, he was able to make marketing his vehicles much more profitable way, allowing him to take over the automobile markets in the 1920s (Carey). This new model was mostly created to benefit farmers because of its low price and ability to drive on poor roads. Not only was Ford able to change the employee treatment around the whole world with reasonable wage changes, but he also changed the treatment of the American consumer with his affordable cars. Ford figured out that mass-producing an automobile for the farmers and the middle class would pay him back in the end. And while making these large sums of money, he did not use waste it on something that would benefit himself but would benefit his whole company and the employees that worked for it. - JR

Henry Ford - Early Life

It started on July 30, 1863, when young Henry Ford was born in Dearborn, Michigan onto a farm with somewhat prosperous parents. Ford started getting into mechanics at a young age because he felt that all of the work that had to be done on the farm could've been done in an easier and quicker way. He had a workshop with many different little pieces of wood and metal because there were no fun toys like there was in the modern age (Abrams). Henry never even learned to read or write because his mind was filled with perpetual knowledge of all types of machinery. It was only until Henry Ford saw the first powered road vehicle, the portable steam engine, where his dreams of automobile creation expanded. Ford thought that the portable steam engine as something that was easy to construct. This caused him to dedicate the rest of his life to making machines that could move on their own (Abrams). - JR

How Henry Ford Became a Business Leader

After dropping out of school to pursue his dream Ford started his first job at The Michigan Car Company Works but was unfortunately fired after only 6 days of labor. He was then given an apprenticeship at the James Flower & Brothers Machine Shop, then went on to fix clocks and watches for local jewelry, another apprenticeship at the Detroit Dry Dock, which paid him less than the last apprenticeship so he decided to leave Detroit (Abrams). After returning to Detroit at age 20, Ford found a job from a man with a Westinghouse steam engine but didn't know how to work it, so Ford was hired to bring the steam engine to other farms and complete labor there. Henry Ford then went on to work ta the Westinghouse Company. He then went on to work at the Edison Illuminating Company in order to learn more about electricity, and not long after created his own home-built gasoline engine. After his dreams of creating an automobile started to decline, he received inspiration from Thomas Edison himself. The first-ever working automobile that Ford created was named the Quadricycle with the body of an old horse buggy, with four wooden wheels and a gasoline engine with four-horsepower (Abrams). This was only the start. - JR

Henry Ford - Business

Henry Ford was seen as just another young machinist who had dreamed of making an automobile that would make him a fortune. He made his way around, as many other young machinists did, starting with his quadricycle (Carey, Friedman). After realizing this might be where he belongs, he began to work harder. His next project was much sturdier, and much more powerful than his first, which only told him he was going in the right direction. Henry Ford eventually lived out his dream, and in 1903 he and a group led by Alexander Y. Malcomson formed the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford started his business as a young dreamer in the 1900's, and still to this day his legacy is being brought on. Ford is still up and running making automobiles around the Nation, still being a very successful business. - NA

One of Ford Motor Company’s most scandalous events happened at the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge Plant. This plant was located in Ford’s hometown of Dearborn, Michigan near the Rouge River. On May 26, 1937, members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) passed out pamphlets to workers in the Ford Rouge Plant to spread awareness for their campaign to secure union representation for workers (Chinery). Workers and members of the campaign decided to fulfill this movement by standing on the overpass on Miller Road at Gate 4 during one of the shift changes at the plant. Posing for photographers, UAW leaders Walter Reuther, Robert Kantor, Richard Frankensteen, and J.J. Kennedy were beaten by Ford Service Department workers. Along with the UAW leaders, reporters and photographers from the UAW Local 174’s Ladies Auxiliar were also beaten (Chinery). Photos along with testimony exposed the brutal methods that the Ford Department workers made it very hard for Ford Motor Company to attain employees in the future. The Battle of the Overpass was set in stone as one of the most influential events for the American labor movement and Ford Motor Company. - JR

All of Henry Ford’s successes form his first automobile, the quadricycle, to the Model T, to all of the cars being made in his memory at Ford Motor Company show how much of an impact he had on the American automobile industry. Ford made innovative automobiles and created these vehicles for citizens who wouldn't be able to afford the modern car. He made his vehicles affordable because he figured that the cheaper automobile would sell to more people bringing more money back to himself and his employees in the long run. A captain of industry is considered a business leader who's successes, not only benefit themselves but the whole country in a positive way. Henry Ford did this in a way of expanding the markets to lower class citizens and proving better compensation for his workers.

Henry Ford began his business with his group, having Alexander Y. Malcomson as the leader. When the business took off, Ford Motors were creating their cars with parts from Ford Manufacturing Company, a business Henry Ford had started himself. Ford Manufacturing Company would begin to charge Ford Motors lots of money for their car parts, leaving Malcomson and the crew with little profit, meanwhile Henry Ford was bringing in lots more money (Carey, Friedman). Eventually in 1906, Malcomson and some of the investors had sold their shares to Ford, now leaving Henry Ford to own fifty eight percent of the company's stock. In 1907 Henry Ford would continue on to become president and merge Ford Manufacturing into Ford Motor (Carey, Friedman). From here on, Ford had been in control of the business and had things go the way he wanted. Ford turned on his investors in a sense by creating Ford Manufacturing Company and charging Ford Motors lots of money, so he would be making a substantial amount more than the others he started his business with. - NA
