It shows how when you can't adapt to certain situations, there can be very harsh consequences. On page 153, Moon Orchids husband says, "You go live with your daughter. I'll mail you the money I've always sent you. I could get arrested if the Americans knew about you. I'm living like an American." The

This story plays into the whole narrative of the text because when Moon Orchid starts having the schizophrenia symptoms, it shows and represents how as a woman, if you can't stand up for yourself or learn to adapt to culture, then you'll be oppressed in society and go crazy. Brave Orchid admits to this when she says, "This fear is an illness" (155) The reason Brave Orchid did not mentally decline is because she was able to become independent and adjust to American culture.

Brave Orchid had never truly relied on a man in her life and this story shows that if you are unable to become a ´woman warrior´nor adapt into the basics nothing will happen. Although Moon Orchid relied on men and was living off of her husband. Because of her reliance on her husband she and her mental health drastically declined. On page 206, "id like to go to China and find those people and see whats a cheat story and whats not", this shows that the entire text as a whole can either be her mother telling her, her aunt telling her, or her putting a spin on the stories herself. This shows how much she trusted and was influenced by her mother rather than relying and being dependent upon on a man- showing and tying together how she truly is a woman warrior

The story play into the narrative as a whole because it’s like a huge talk-story. Kingston’s mother told her the story differently from her brothers. Her mother was showing what could happen if you do not learn how to do things for yourself. Moon was dependent on other people and did not know how to do things like dishes. “What my brother actually said was” (Kingston 163). Kingston mother told her this story, just like the others, to teach her what to do and what not to do.

This story plays into the narrative as a whole because when Moon Orchid starts to go crazy, it shows that if you are not an independent person and you can't stand up for what you want and believe in then you can't adapt to certain situations and usually the consequences of not being able to adapt are extremely harsh. " This fear is an illness". Moon Orchid failed because she wasn't independent but Brave orchid did not fail because she was able to have self confidence and adapt to culture which is the moral of the story. If women cannot represent themselves then they will be taken advantage of.

I think that this story plays into the narrative text as a whole because it coincides with other talk stories that Kingston includes. It exhibits the Chinese cultures and the themes of oppression that are present throughout the book. I think that it also plays into the way women are treated that is shown, and fighting against the cultural norms. Moon Orchid feels that her husband has power over her because of being a woman. “Moon orchids eyes grew big like a child’s, ‘I shouldn’t be here’” (Kingston 124). This quote shows

This story plays into the narrative of the text as a whole because Moon Orchid experiencing mental decline because of America kind of validates everything that her mother told her about the "ghosts" in America in the stories throughout the book. This story shows the differences between American culture and Chinese culture that we have continually seen in Woman Warrior. This story also ties into the theme of oppression of women that is demonstrated throughout the novel. It shows the way women are treated and how they have to work against the acceptable cultural norms.

This story plays into the narrative of the text as a whole because it has connections to all the other talk stories that are told in the book. Moon Orchid's decline and admission to the mental asylum validates the story that Kingston's mom told about the "ghosts" that live in America. Moon Orchid has a very hard time adapting to the new culture, she was so used to being dependent and reliant on her husband. Page 155 states "This fear is an illness," and this is said because Moon Orchid's fear of standing up for herself and assimilating affected her mental stability greatly, making her decline.

This story plays into the narrative of the text as a whole by the way all the other talk-stories combine into one. In the story as a whole it shows the different ways of life and themes in both China and America, showing the biggest changes. I believe it also plays into the effects of women and the way they are being treated, which as readers can see is similar in both America and China. On page 152, Moon Orchid's husband states "It's a mistake for you to be here. You can't belong. You don't have the hardness for this country." It just shows how people see women, they see them as emotional and weak, that they cannot adapt the right way in a new place. This puts Moon Orchid down even more then she already was the way she was treated and left behind by her husband.

This story plays into the narrative because it is a talk-story which supports the theme of roundness. Roundness has been a constant theme throughout this book. The roundness is that people will go on a journey, but they will always come back home. On page 157, Brave Orchid says, "come back to us." Moon Orchid's spirit has left and Brave Orchid is calling for it to come back home. This theme seed was also present in Brave Orchid's medical story, and in Fa Mulan's story. Another theme in this story that ties it to the narrative is the oppression of women. On page 152, Moon Orchid's husband states "It's a mistake for you to be here. You can't belong. You don't have the hardness for this country." This shows how Moon Orchid was oppressed and humiliated by her husband. Women are just seen as machines, and not human beings. This theme was present in all of the stories in this book.

The story plays into the narrative of the text as a whole because Moon Orchid was to much of a dependent person causing her to become ill. In page 157 she said, "This fear is an illness." She was affected horribly by the change. Her sister Brave however wasn't affected because she was an independent woman already and was outspoken as a woman.
