For learners, British values are a set of principles designed to help people be active, responsible, and engaged citizens in a diverse and modern Britain. They are promoted in schools as part of the curriculum and daily life. 

The five core British values are:

• Democracy

• The Rule of Law

• Individual Liberty

• Mutual Respect

• Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs 

1. Democracy

This is the idea that everyone in society should have a voice in how the country is run, and that the government is held accountable by the people. 

• What it means: People have the right to vote in elections, and decisions are often made by a majority vote.

• For learners: You can learn about democracy by holding votes, having class debates, and discussing how decisions are made in your family, training, and community. 

2. The Rule of Law

This is the principle that everyone, including the government, must follow the law. Laws are made to protect citizens, and there are consequences for breaking them. 

• What it means: The police and courts ensure laws are upheld fairly for everyone.

• For learners: You learn about the rule of law by following rules and understanding why they exist. Visitors from the police or fire services also help you understand their role in keeping society safe. 

3. Individual Liberty

This is the freedom for people to make their own choices and decisions, as long as they stay within the law and do not harm others. 

• What it means: You have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to choose your own path in life.

• For learners: You can learn about individual liberty by being encouraged to have your own opinions and make informed choices. This also includes standing up against bullying and using the internet safely. 

4. Mutual Respect

This is about treating others with dignity, regardless of their background or beliefs. It means valuing and considering other people's views, even if you do not share them. 

• What it means: In a diverse society, respecting others is key to building an inclusive community.

• For learners: You can show mutual respect by listening to others in class, sharing and taking turns, and being a good friend to everyone. 

5. Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

This involves accepting that people have different religions, traditions, and ways of life from your own. 

• What it means: It is about appreciating diversity and challenging prejudice and discrimination.

• For learners: You can experience this by learning about different cultures and religions, visiting places of worship, and celebrating different festivals

Core principles of equality

• Fair treatment: Everyone should be treated with respect and fairness.

• Equal opportunities: All individuals should have the same chance to succeed and reach their potential.

• Eliminating discrimination: It involves actively working to remove discrimination and prejudice based on protected characteristics. 

Protected characteristics

In many legal frameworks, such as the Equality Act 2010 in the UK, equality protects individuals from discrimination based on specific "protected characteristics". These often include: 

• Age

• Disability

• Gender reassignment

• Pregnancy and maternity

• Race (including color, nationality, and ethnic or national origin)

• Religion or belief

• Sex

• Sexual orientation
