Homers father was originally his opposing force, but after church the  pastor altered the story so it gave more support to the BCWA. For example, Mrs. Riley  and Sonny's mother both encourage Sonny's dream to build rockets. This is helpful because they share the same vision for his future as he does. Counter to this, his father is encouraging him in the wrong way, which is not helpful because Homer Sr. wants Homer Jr. to be a coal man instead of a rocket boy.

As an example, Sonny idolizes Dr. von Braun, but von Braun is a Nazi, so he is clearly a bad role model - although Sonny sees him as a good role model for rocketry. 
Another negative of blindly following a hero is that sometimes they turn out to be bad people if you have any sort of interaction with them, which can shatter your faith in them.
