Self Sufficiency-

To begin with, Jeannette mentions, "'I'm worried about you,' 'Tell me what I can do to help,'" demonstrating Jeannette's attempt to help her mother (p5). Jeannette says, "'Mom, I saw you picking through trash in the East Village a few stays ago,'" and her mother chooses to respond by saying '"Well, people in this country are too wasteful. It's my way of recycling'" (p5).
This specific example demonstrates Rose Mary's self-sufficiency and stubbornness to receive help from her daughter, despite being in these circumstances where she needs to scrimmage through a dumpster and live on the street to support herself.
The picture I had chosen correlates with the theme presented in the book because Rose Mary resorted to dumpster diving instead of accepting help offered by Jeannette.

In the book, we see how The Glass Castle children grow up with trust and an abundance of love for their parents because their parents led them to believe they were living a perfect life. With this in mind, Jeannette mentions, "Someone had slashed him apart with a knife and stolen all the money" (p228), not even thinking that her father would do such things, as she loves and trusts him with her entire heart.

Jeannette later mentions, '"Why are you doing this to us, Dad?' 'Why?" because she was left with an abundance of disappointment because her father stole the money they had been saving and even chose to lie about it.

The picture I had chosen correlates with the theme presented in this book, as Oz was the piggy bank stolen.

Throughout The Glass Castle, we see how the Walls family lives in nonconformity and how they refuse to conform to what society deems normal.
Jeannette mentions, "...when I stood up and started stirring the hot dogs again, I felt a blaze of heat on my right side" (p9). We see that this is a significant example of nonconformity, as it is not normal for a three-year-old to be at the stove cooking hot dogs.
I chose to utilize the image of a little girl at the stove cooking hot dogs because this is exactly the situation that Jeannette was in.

Coming of age-

In The Glass Castle, we see a significant coming-of-age theme among many of the Walls children as they begin to understand the previous circumstances they have been in and how that has impacted the way that they are today.

As a child, Jeannette showed an immense amount of love and care for her parents because she was unknowledgeable of the circumstances she endured as a child.

In section three of The Glass Castle, Jeannette replies to her mom '"If you want to be treated like a mother...you should act like one"' (p219). This quote demonstrates the theme of coming of age because as Jeannette is growing up and maturing, she began to realize that her mother acts like a teenager and avoids her significant role as a mother.

I had chosen the image in correlation to the theme because Jeannette and her mother never had a mother-daughter bond, as the image showed. Jeannette only realized this during her coming of age.

Forgiveness-

In The Glass Castle, we see how the theme of forgiveness arises as the Walls children choose to forgive their parents despite the immense pain they have caused her.

At the beginning of part two of the book, we see how Rex teaches Jeannette how to swim by tossing her into the water and telling her, "'Sink or swim"' (p66)! Although this traumatized Jeannette and caused her anguish, she forgave her father and said, "Once I got my breath back, I figured he must be right" (p66). This quote represents the theme of forgiveness because although Jeannette's parents caused her pain, she has chosen to forgive them.

I had chosen to attach the image of a father tossing her daughter into a body of water because this is the exact way Rex taught Jeannette how to swim.

Unconditional Love-

Unconditional love is demonstrated throughout The Glass Castle as the entire Walls family exhibits this theme despite external circumstances.

Many of the Walls children demonstrate this unconditional love to their parents, but in the example, I have provided, we see how Rose Mary demonstrates unconditional love towards Erma. While talking to Jeannette, Rose Mary replies saying-"'You have to show compassion for her,"' which exhibits this concept of unconditional love because despite what Erma did to Brian, Rose Mary believes that we should forgive (p144).

On that same page, Rose Mary mentioned, "You should never hate anyone, even your worst enemies." This represents this theme of unconditional love because although someone may have done something that displeased them, you should still "'...find the redeeming quality and love the person for that"' (p144).

I had chosen the image of a family together because that demonstrates the Walls family precisely and ties into the theme of unconditional love, as the entire Walls family exhibits unconditional love for each other.
