When you know your students you are able to form relationships that will help them succeed because you know what they need. Children need their basic needs met before they can be completely successful in your classroom. Maslow had great explanation of this and I think it is important to remember these.

You need to keep in regular contact with your parents. Tell them concerns you have about their child and allow for two way and open communication! You want your parents to feel welcome and like your door is always open! You want to encourage your parents to be involved In student learning.

I have personally seen children who were below grade level in reading (not science I know but just bear with me) increase three grade levels over just an eight-week period because they were told that they could do it and were held to high expectations. Everyone needs their own personal cheerleader. If students are held to low expectations, they have nothing to lose. But if students are held to high expectations, there is hope. They don't want to let themselves down, or you.

All children are capable of doing anything and everything they set their mind to. I think that all children should be treated equally. No student in the classroom should feel "lower" or "not as important" to the teacher. As a teacher it is our job and responsibility to teach all of the students and love them and be fully invested in their education. MAKE THEM FEEL IMPORTANT, SAFE, and LOVED. Teaching will have more meaning for the students if they want to learn because they know that the teacher cares. Also, students will want to show off their knowledge to the teacher that cares. This is because the child knows that the teacher wants to know their knowledge and what all they are learning.

Children need to feel equal in the classroom. Despite their grades or how well they do. They need to feel as if they all are capable of learning. When I was in elementary school it felt like the teacher would always call on the same people to help her. Many children thought she liked them better because they were smarter than the rest. They made the best grades. This causes students to feel less important. It can make students not even want to try. It is crucial that teacher make sure they give children equal opportunity and help each child reach their full potential.

Children need to feel safe in your classroom. They need to feel that they are important and know that someone believes in them. It is important to encourage them to participate, and know that they are equal with others. We as teachers need to build relationships, and know them as individuals.
