Matthew 25:31-46

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Mary Mackillop brought people together by teaching children and giving more food and water. She made sacrifices by giving up her own food to feed to the poor because they had nothing. She spent time in prayer by praying to God every day and going group prayers with the Josephites. Mary Mackillop spoke out against injustice by feeding the poor and talking to them so they were not outcasts. She spoke out against the poor people and how they are treated like outsiders. She had to accept that they had little money and could not pay for the food themselves. Mary Mackillop used her influence to promote the word of God and to love others by feeding and caring for the homeless and to educate children that have are poor and cannot afford education.

Mary Mackillop was born January 15, 1842, in Fitzroy, known as Newtown then. She was born the eldest of 8 children to Catholic Scottish immigrants. She got along great with her parents and younger siblings, but was always worried about their future life due to her Dad losing his job and her mum not employed. They got their income mainly by Mary working part time at Sands and Kenny Stationers as a clerk. Mary saw a lot of un-educated kids on the street that were poor. She did not like seeing this because she though everyone should have an education. So, she started to educate young kids by teaching them the basics of maths and English. She also talked to the kids a lot about God and his teachings because she grew up in a Catholic family. This was when she decided to spread the word of God just like Jesus did.

The sisters of Saint Joseph of the sacred heart are an organisation that continues the actions of Mary Mackillop. They bring people together by educating them and caring for the less fortunate. They did not need to make sacrifices because they choose to feed the homeless and educate young children. They spend their time praying by going to church and doing regular group prayers. They speak out against injustice by feeding and caring for the less fortunate. They spoke out about the injustice between the homeless by feeding and caring for them so they know they are not forgotten and they are not outcasts. They had to accept that they were homeless because they did not have jobs and could get money to help themselves. They use their influence to promote love towards others by helping others that are less fortunate and educate children about Jesus and their founder, Mary Mackillop and how they showed love and compassion towards others.

A writing I have found from Mary Mackillop is, “We must teach more by example, then by word.” This was written because people follow and do the actions people do. If you tell a person to do something, they will probably not do it at all or straight away. It was written for The Josephites to tell them to do more acts of kindness then tell others to do it because others will do the same. The impact of this quote is that people will follow the actions of you instead of being told to do them.

I chose the parable of the Good Samaritan because it talks about caring for your neighbour. A neighbour in the bible is referring to anyone around you that is need of your help. This parable influenced Mary Mackillop because she then cared for the homeless by giving them and water, and she taught for the poor children that were uneducated. The Good Samaritan relates to us because we can be the people to help the homeless, or anyone that is misfortune. This parable is similar to the story of the sheep and the goats because it talks about separating the goats from the sheep, which is similar to the Priest and the Levite that did not stop to help the Jewish man because he was different than them.

Luke 10:25-37

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”
In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

At the time of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo X111 was concerned about the growing inequality of wealth between the worker and the employer. In the year 1891, he wrote an encyclical named Rerum Novarum which challenged the rights and duties of those with wealth and the right and duties of labourers. Pope Leo X111 states, if the workers get what they need to survive, the worker will be more efficient and the boss of the job will, therefore, get more benefit. To gain money at someone else’s disadvantage is against Christian teaching. If one has more wealth than others, they should share with others that are less fortunate. The less fortunate should not have to force others to share their goods, others should be willing to do it. Mary practised the virtue of generosity by giving up her time to teach uneducated kids.
