We've all heard about how it's bad to eat so many carbs and we have to be aware of how much we intake, especially with our American diets. But we also have to acknowledge that our body needs carbs. It's important to take in good carbs too, like from fruits and veggies as well.

Carbohydrates- The nutrition who gets a bad rep
Growing up I always was told from my mother and other women “watch your carbs or you’ll get fat” or “bread and rice is what will stick to you.” I think carbs have a poor misunderstanding that they are bad for you or the cause of weight gain, which has lead to the ever so popular diet “keto.” My view of carbs? Carbs are amazing! They are the number source of fuel your body uses, keto makes me cringe and I think is just another trendy fad diet. I think a lot of people misunderstand what carbs are. Yes when you eat them in the form of high processed foods like donuts, cookies and cakes, the results could be weight gain. But carbs are also fruits and vegetables, your brain needs carbs, your body needs carbs, it’s the first and main resource the body is going to use for energy. If you want to feel tired all the time, don’t eat carbs. If you want to feel healthy and energized learn to consume the right carbs like potatoes- which are full of fiber, vitamins and nutrients. Carbs are not the enemy, fad diets are.

Carbs have that stigma that if you eat them, you will end up gaining weight. It has become a theme that in order to lose weight or be healthy you shouldn't be eating carbs. However, carbs provide cellular energy for you body to function and are an essential part of your diet. Yes, there are "bad carbs" in treats and desserts that you should try to avoid. But on the contrary, carbs found in fruit, vegetables and more nutritious foods are essential towards your diet. The nutrition found in french fries is significantly less than that found in an apple. People should not be afraid of eating carbs as long as they are consuming in moderation and choosing the nutritious options.

With salad and maybe fruit as well, but the point was to eat some good carbs so we'd have energy the next day. I didn't really get why at the time, but it was fun.
I also remember while growing up sometimes hearing jokes like "bread makes you fat", but it wasn't really associated with carbohydrates in my mind.
Now my understanding of carbohydrates is different. Bread and pastries are delicious (especially homemade or European), but I know that if I eat it disproportionally to everything else in my diet than it's not healthy!

Currently my stance is that, just like with everything, they aren't the source of evil as long as you can moderate your intake. However, too much can cause weight gain, fatigue, bloating, etc.. Carbs are our primary source of fast burning energy. Athletes, runners, gymnasts, and many more who are active, usually have a good intake of carbohydrates before and after activity. However, for people who may be inactive or need to lose weight, carbs should be less of an importance to them. For instance, my mother who is trying to lose weight, is on a keto diet, which is an extremely low/no carb diet.

The good thing that I have heard about carbohydrates is that they are the main source of energy for humans. Carbs are great for athletes who like to run or have intense workouts because it replenishes your body efficiently. Many track athletes eat huge portions of carbs the day/night before a meet due to the fact that it offers the body a great source of energy, as mentioned above. There are bad things about carbs, as well. The bad would be that the overconsumption of carbs can cause weight gain. There is a negative stigma with carbs and that a proper diet should not contain too much, however, too little is not beneficial to an everyday, healthy diet.

I grew up in a household where I was taught that eating foods like bread, tortillas, pastas, cereal, etc, all contained really high amounts of carbs. For this reason, my parents always told my siblings and I to not eat as much because this would cause bloating and lead us to gain weight. As I grew older, I learned that carbs are one of our bodies' main source of energy. I recently learned though, that carbs are not the only source of energy our bodies can run off of. During the summer I got into the diet keto and got a look into how our body really takes the food we eat and converts it into energy for us as well as how limiting the net carbs we eat forces our body to run off of fats, causing us to lose weight.

Carbs are what fuel our bodies and allow for us to have energy. If you overeat, yes you can gain weight, but you can also lose weight and eat the same amount of carbs. There are complex and processed carbs, so if you eat brown rice rather than mashed potatoes, you're eating cleaner carbs, but still getting all the good starchy foods in.

There is a common misconception around carbs that they should be removed from one's diet to prevent weight gain. While carbs can be linked to obesity and therefore type 2 diabetes, they do not need to be completely removed from our diets. They fuel our cells with energy which can also be stored for future use in the form of glycogen. Like with all other foods, healthier options should be consumed and everything should be done in moderation.

That if you want to lose weight that you should stop eating carbs and that carbs have no nutritional value. However, carbohydrates are an important source of energy in our body - it's actually the preferred source of energy for our body and its metabolic processes to use. I think that how we consume carbohydrates should be approached the same way that we approach anything with our health: eating in moderation and in combination with a balance of protein and fats.

When I think of this word I often think also of salt, fatty substances, and specific foods such as pasta and bread. However, I think it is safe to say that carbohydrates are so much more than this picture I had painted. Carbohydrates are a major provider of nutrients for our bodies. This means that they not only should be apart of a healthy diet, but are also often essential to well balanced nutrition. This is applicable even when the goal is to lose weight! I think it is important that we not only recognize but also work toward minimizing this negative stereotype about carbs. As long as you maintain a healthy balance of this food source, they are very good sources of fuel!

Carbs are in almost everything we consume; bread, pizza, vegetables, milk, etc. That is why many people tend to blame carbs when it comes to weight gain. Weight gain is only eating food in an excess amount, carbs are not the enemy. They are a vital part of the energy needed for our body. Carbs are a good thing, but not paying attention to the amount consumed can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

My friends don't eat carbs en masse in an attempt to lose weight, my mother will carb count when we go out to eat, health commercials will focus in carbs as a scapegoat of healthy eating, ext. When the word 'carbs' come up 9/10 times it is negative. But there instances where carbs are the good guy. Professional athletes carb load before they compete, and they are an easy way to gain calories for those that under-eat. My thoughts on all of this information about carbs is that it is all sensationalized, people only consume the headlines of articles so they have to pop with bold statements either vilifying or praising carbs when the reality is somewhere in the middle.

While it is true that a high intake of carbohydrates may set your body up for risk of diabetes, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar, it is also important to remember that carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. It was until I was around 11 or 12 when I was involved in heavy sports like track and field and cross country until I realized the full potential of carbohydrates and how they contribute to athletic performance. Not only did a higher intake of carbohydrates improve my athletic performance, they improved my energy and academic performance in my daily life as well.

Carbs are always portrayed as the enemy, when in reality I believe they are the best for you. They are our bodies preferred energy source.

I have heard plenty of good and bad things when it comes to carbs. I know that there are two types of carbs, simple and complex carbohydrates. I believe that simple carbs are simple sugars that give an individual a short burst of energy. Complex carbs, foods like pasta and vegetables, offer high amounts of fiber and give you energy that can last the entire day. Carbs are important to the human body as they are the main source of our energy but like all types of food, it is all about moderation. Eating a large amount of complex carbs will not harm a person if they maintain a balanced diet and active lifestyle.

I think carbohydrates have a bad reputation, but really they aren't evil like people think. They are just one of the three macronutrients. Carbs are in grains, fruit, veggies, sugar, dairy, and more. They are the main energy source for people because they are the easiest things to convert to glucose and eventually glycogen, which is what our muscles use as fuel. Carbohydrates themselves don't cause weight gain like some people think, but one of the problems with carbs is that it's easy to overeat simple carbs and overeating anything does cause weight gain. Refined sugar is the worst for this because it contains a lot of calories with very little nutrients and is addicting. Whole grains with nutrients and fiber, however, are beneficial and part of a balanced diet, so they shouldn't be completely cut out from your diet. The fiber especially can reduce the insulin spike people get from sugary foods and will help with long term energy instead of the carb crash that comes with simple sugars.

Growing up in a bengali household consuming a good amount of carbohydrates was a staple in our household. In the morning we would eat flour tortillas with potatoes and veggies for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, a big portion of our meals consisted of white rice. It was normal for us to eat that amount of carbs every single day. Naturally from the poor diet, I gained a lot of weight as a kid. When I got to high school I realized that if I want to live a long healthy life,I need to start making positive changes in my diet. So I began by cutting down the portion of carbs I consumed, and saw and felt a change within my body. I was loosing weight more quickly, I wasn't feeling sluggish after eating a meal. Carbs give us a lot of energy which is a good aspect of carbs, however, I know from personal experience how hinder it could be to our health if we were to over consume the carbs. We should never stop consuming carbs because of any diet we follow. Just having a balanced meal which would include a healthy amount of carbs is the best way to go.

However, it is often said to be important to not "overdo it" when it comes to carbs, but rather, to include them in a healthy moderation. Carbohydrates have definitely come to have a negative reputation in diet culture, and I think it is largely due to people's excess consumption of refined carbs.

Growing up as a swimmer, I was told by both my coaches and parents that I need to be eating tons and tons of carbs every day to ensure I have enough energy for practices and meets. Our team would often have "pasta-feeds" the night before meets where we all ate the most carb-loaded meal you could imagine. Through all the pasta-feeds I have had, I have realized that not all carbs are valued the same. Spaghetti isn't as nutritious as quinoa, and chips aren't as healthy as sweet potatoes. This taught me that some carbs are healthy in moderation, whereas others are best left off your plate.

That's why when I hear about people going on diets, they always say that they are cutting their carb intake.

To keep the body well-balanced, they should be eaten in moderation.

Bad: Carbohydrates are often overlooked. Some people believe that carbohydrates are the source of weight gain. Having this mindset makes them completely eliminate carbs from their diet if they are attempting to lose weight, which should not be the case as carbs serve a vital component to the body.

Carbs are the "boogeyman" to many, but they really shouldn't. All one really needs to know is that carbs are the first source of fuel for the body. Thus, yes they can be bad if all you do is consume a large number of carbs and don't burn any energy. On the flipside, knowing they are your first source of energy, one can really use this to their advantage in their fitness journey. I would urge anyone who is struggling to either gain or lose weight to research cycling carbs and fats, absolute game changer.

Some people are avoiding them at all cost because they think carbs are the main cause of weight gain, while others rely on carb consumption for performance in their sport. I know that when I first started swimming competitively in high school, I actually had to remind myself that I needed these carbs, and it wasn't going to affect me negatively because I would burn so many calories at practice. Then once I stopped swimming, I had to change my diet so that I didn't end up gaining weight. When I was swimming it didn't matter that much what kind of carbs I was getting, but now I have to make sure I am mostly consuming complex carbs (good carbs).

CARBS!!! Whenever i hear this word come into conversation i immediately draw to the word energy! before any game or big workout coming i tend to carb load the night before so that my body may be at optimal levels ready to go. there is a difference between good and bad carbs and the energy they may produce, for example pizza compared to a bowl of pasta the oils the fats and carbs are gonna be completely different in their structure. Personally that pizza is gonna make me feel not so great the next day assuming i have a workout.

One common factor that many people hear about carbs from the Keto Diet. The Keto Diet is a special diet that highlights low carbs and high protein. This is a way to build muscle and lessen the fat intake. Carbs are a huge source of fat. Many say carbs are bad for you, and others say carbs are ok in moderation. As a personal view, I believe carbs are ok in moderation. They should be kept to a minimum due to the fat content, but no one should deprive themselves. Overall carbs can be a good and bad source for different reasons.

Carbohydrates are often seen as “bad” when it comes to the weight loss industry, although this is not always the case. Healthy and nutritious sources of carbs are available and used by the body to fuel itself during its daily activity. Knowing the types of carbohydrates you are consuming is important as well as understanding how the brain uses them to function.

Being an athlete I have always known carbohydrates to be a good thing. Especially for runners. I know lots of friends who would load up on carbs days before their race to have lots of energy. Carbohydrates are an essential part of the diet just like protein and fats. I have also seen a documentary showing that the oldest living people on earth have very carbohydrate based diets. Some studies had even shown that this might be the reason they live so long.

I associate carbohydrates with energy. I never saw them as bad especially as I have always been active, so they were good for me. I was taught to go for nutrient rich or "complex" carbs rather than "empty" carbs. I think this has helped me to stay healthy and fit for the most part. If I eat a lot of empty or simple carbs, I crash later. Eating nutrient-rich carbs such as fruit, whole grains, etc really make a difference in my energy levels. I have heard of athletes "carbing up" with pasta or something the night before a big event but this has never worked well for me. It works well if I have a moderate amount of carbs the night before, and then in mid-workout, take down an energy tab or tbsp of honey or something to keep me going at my peak performance.

Whenever I think about carbs I think about bread. After doing my own research I discovered that there are three main categories: sugars, scratches, and fibers. Good carbs that are best to eat like potatoes, quinoa and my favorite pulses, which happen to be beans, lentils, chickpeas. When referring to bad carbs, they usually contain low fiber amounts, mainly white flour and sugar. For example french fries, pizza, hotdogs. Which I am predicting what it meant to be ugly carbs. Consuming too much of bad carbs can result in increased risk of many diseases, including obesity, heart diseases and also type 2 diabetes.

- Tonanzith Annel Hernandez Aguilera

Carbs are very important for all bodily functions because without them our bodies would not produce energy fast enough.

Well I fully understand how important it is to eat carbohydrates for the average person. I grew up thinking carbs were bad for you but great for athletes. The term carbo loading is for ever embedded in my brain because I grew up doing swim. As I got older and sicker i stopped needing to eat a lot of carbs because I was not as active. My mom always told me stay away from the breads and pastas. It was not until my doctor told me to stop eating as much of them that made me listen. Pulling out carbs is part of an anti-inflammatory diet! That's what I am working on now!

I have heard thatcarbohydrates are very healthy in the sense of how they give you energy, and we depend on them for this. I train very intensely 6 days a week at the gym, so I need to eat carbs (pasta, bread, etc) before I go to the gym in order to have energy while I am there. However, I have heard they help you gain weight if you do not burn them off through working out, and like anything else, you have to eat them in moderation
