What Music means to me

Music is much much more than words being thrown around. It creates a story for the reader or in our case the listener. Music is like poetry, or watching a movie, because it tells a very interesting story about that persons life, it can allow you to peep through the the most smallest part of the brain, sometimes it can be confusing, and sometimes it can be very liberating. Music has the ability to make you happy, sad, or just plain mad. Music is an expression of feelings and its something that everyone can relate to. Music is the relief for many of us long for after a long day. Torinos says, “Age is another prominent basis for formation of cultural cohort” (Turino 111), and I agree and disagree because any age group can connect to any group of music, no matter the age. If the music speaks it speaks! So whether its country, pop, rock and roll, or even spirituals music is apart of our everyday lives.

How would you describe your musical identity?

My musical identity would reference, Avatar the last Airbender because music can bring air( songs that make you feel gleeful and care free) water ( that can make you feel like your floating on clouds), Fire( songs that make you mad or make you think passionately) or Earth( songs that just make you want to dance)

For instance one of my air sounds is Harry Belafonte’s , “I am sure glad” because it brings my spirt into a joyful, gleeful and carefree mood, Motowns classic hits made a lot of my air sounds like “Rock with you” by Michael Jackson, Sam Cooks,’ A change is gonna come”, or one of my favorites the Temptations, “My girl” makes me want to sing with them at the top of my lungs. I was born in the 90’s and that’s really all my mom played growing up as a child so groups like, “Ready for the world and their classic hit, and one of my absolute favorite songs “Let me love you down” topped the R&B charts and many of girls hearts. People like Ginuwine, Mary J , TLC, Boys2men, Monica, Backstreet, Troop, and the Force MD’s really shaped R&B, with this type of music its almost like they are speaking directly to you. I really favor similar artists like Luther Vandross, and Jagged Edge. While growing up in back woods of east Texas we “ we sung old hymns” songs like “Guide me o’er,O great Jehovah, “Steal Away to Jesus,” and “I love the Lord” these songs speak volumes because these songs were written by oppressed people, and sometimes enslaved people which make them even more powerful because we can somewhat glance through their minds and paint a faint picture of what that must have been like. Nickleback, Coldplay, HoobaStank, Shine Down, and Green day are my water people because they are the songs that you listen to as you wind your day down. “This is how you remind me- by Nickelback is a great “unwind song”. My fire people are artists Boosie, Webbie, Tupac, Biggie, and Easy -E because they made you think about what was being sad, they also had a deep passion for their music and a change in this world, their songs were about how life was in South Central Los Angeles, “west Coast”, and in Louisiana. They made rap more than just rap but how life really was. Lastly the earth people artists like High-five, fifth Harmony, little mix, Fergie, and Destiny’s child, all make you want to get out of your seat and dance.

I really like what Turnio said about society, He said," In our society class, gender, occupation, and color are particually salient parts of self that strongly influence social position experiences, and thus habits. (Turnio112)
I somewhat agree to this because sometimes i fell as if society says because we are this color and because we work here we have to like this certain type of music, when that isnt true . Music doesnt discriminate, and I dont think that just because your a certian color or you worl a certain place that that should determine the type of music that you listen to.
