Synchronous vs asynchronous activities are always a challenge. Students grumble loudly when they have to do synchronous activities. They also report that synchronous activities are the most rewarding (after they have completed them. That said, students who attend online institutions usually do so because they don't have the availability to to synchronous work (although some do for accessibility etc). As a general rule, for good or for bad, I tend to go asynchronous if at all possible, and synchronous only if it is not possible to be asynchronous.

I appreciate the comment that both over involvement and under involvement on behalf of the instructor can be detrimental.

I absolutely will be putting apts in my calendar for engaging in this course. Without getting it in the calendar it won't happen :) I had it on today, actually, and was able to log in right away :)
