         <description><![CDATA[<div>Prior to starting the course I had brief knowledge in regards to mental health statistics for adults. Since I work in a Title 1 middle school, all of my research for previous classes had focused on that age group.&nbsp;<br><br>Being able to take the quizzes to see how many myths I knew about mental health showed me I did not know as much as I thought. According to the infographic by Nami, "one-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14; three-quarters by the age of 24." This information was shocking since I work with 12-15 year students. I did not know that this age group is when students start to being diagnosed with mental illnesses.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Even though everyone experiences trauma, it is never truly discussed how much on an impact this has on other family members. During this unit I have learned that if trauma is not handled properly it can easily be passed on from one generation to the next.&nbsp;<br><br>My biggest take away from this unit is how influential counselors can be. In my future role as a Social-Emotional Learning Specialist, I have to be very well informed on the different traumas and how they manifest themselves in students. I would also need to be able to provide different resources to teachers. </div>]]></description>

I can see how the tool boxes we have created in other classes would be beneficial in this case.          <description><![CDATA[<div>There has been an increase in school violence. Even though there is no one size fits all for school shooters, each campus has their own way of determining the best way to identify potential threats.&nbsp;<br><br>Currently on my campus I serve on the Threat Assessment Team. This team is made up of different professionals on campus. We all meet when there has been a threat made and determine the severity of the threat and then create an action plan.  Being on this team has allowed for me to see how much truly goes into taking each campus threat seriously.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cultural Competence is knowing that even though the client/student may have a different religious or ethnic background from you, it is still important that you are providing a service.&nbsp;<br><br>There has been a push from the American Counseling Association to have more research conducted on Cultural Competence. The current research has proven that people of color respond better to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy when the counselor understands their cultural and is able to provide services that align. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my future role of being a Social-Emotional Learning Counselor there will be several ways a student can be referred to me.&nbsp;<br><br>The first way a student can be referred to my is by a teacher. This teacher will fill out a form noting a behavior that they have noticed in the student and then provide a day and or time that they would like for me to come in and observe the student.&nbsp;<br><br>Another way a student can be referred to me is if they fill out the Counselor Corner form asking to speak to me. They will indicate on their form what exactly they would like to discuss in our meeting and they will also be required to read over the consent form&nbsp; prior to our first meeting.&nbsp;<br><br>The last way a student can be referred to my office is by a parent. The parent will be able to email, and or go to my website and request a meeting between me and the student. They will also be provided the consent form. I will also explain to them that the students comments are confidently unless they are threating to harm themselves or others. </div>]]></description>
