This article talks about how the increase of safety standards on toys has reduced the number of recalls on toys over the last 3 to 4 years. I was very surprised to learn that there were nearly 172 toy recalls in 2008. Also, I found it interesting that there were 186,000 emergency room visits due to toy related accidents. That's a lot more than I would have thought.

It surprised me that there were only 36% of theatres examined that had women as artistic directors. I thought it would be more half and half. According to this article only 24% of directors employed by the theatres during 2011-12 were women which is very surprising to me.

This article is referencing the decline in young drivers across the country. As time goes on, less teenagers and young adults are receiving their driver's license. I find it very interesting that in Texas, the percent of young people with licenses dropped 12% from the year 2000 to 2010. However, I find it relieving that the increase in walking trips for young people has increased 24% from 2000 to 2009.

This article is basically talking about how younger boys especially have a lot of energy and when they participate in sports, their energy levels are contained and they aren't as agressive. I found it interesting that the change in boys was so drastic but the change in girls was little to nothing. you'd think there would be a least a signifcant change in girls. I would assume that's just the age factor. I also found that it was interesting how verbal therapy isn't nearly as effective as introducing a sport. the population of the experiment was 649 different kids with different backgrounds so the variation of the child had nothing to do with the experiment and was controlled.

This article points out that statistics show that since 2008, for each season, more that 80% of the models hired were white. This surprised me because I assumed with the growing diversity in the US that designers would be hiring more models with different ethnicities than white. I was also surprised that top designers like Calvin Klein had hired no models of color because I assumed he would to appeal to the consumers that were of those ethnicities.

This article discusses data that show that more than 2/3 of wireless 9-1-1 calls in Texas came in without accurate location information. I was surprised to see that the percentage of calls with phase II data dropped 33%, even though the amount of wireless calls coming in increased. I also think it's scary that 67% of wireless 9-1-1 calls in Texas don't provide accurate location information, which is obviously crucial to helping the caller.

This Article shows the percentage of people around the United States that are currently participating in any physical sport or exercise on an average day. The graphs provided shows the different percentages by region in the United States. The highest percentage of people ages 15 years and older who are engaged in sports or exercise on a average day is about 20%. I feel like this article really shows how important exercise is, especially in our day in age. I found the percntgaes conduced surprisingly low.

What I found interesting about the article is that despite having less than 5% of the worlds population, the United States has around 35-50% of the world's civilian owned guns. I also found it interesting that the United States has 88 firearms per 100 people, and California has the highest gun crime rate out of all the states. It truly illustrates our issues on guns in the United States.
