Historians normally use letters, diaries, books, and maybe even photographs to determine or get more info as to what may have happened or when something was made. Other things like videos are important as well as things such as fossils.

The problem itself with all these things is the time and effort needed to find these things in the first place. Some things will be harder to search for or find. Some will be easier. Sometimes things won't have dates or maybe you can't pinpoint what year the fossils were actually living creatures. It's all up to the overall luck and skill of the person as well as how much research/searching they do for the answers. And even these little things can complicate a situation far more.

On the archaeological side there's the problem of historians not knowing what to look for, or the fact that past historians were careless in their searches.

Factors that can complicate their investigations might be the loss of historical actifacts or biases of educated people at the time either in the period historians are studying or the time period when historians are publishing their work.

Historians can gather stories using written records, like books, newspaper stories, diaries, government documents, family documents and even inscriptions carved into stone. They can use photos, drawings and paintings to collect images. They can listen to recordings from witnesses to important events. They can watch videos to see how people in a time period talked about events they lived through. They can travel to places where events took place to look at the buildings and the landscapes, talk to the people and visit historic sites like battlefields. The collection of information is only the first step. The historian then needs to separate fact from fiction by comparing information from different sources to get a true picture of the past. Uncovering the past may also include working with people in other fields like archaeologists and geologists.

They use evidence like journals, books, and art of course but there's more to it than that they have to use logical deduction to make sense of these things. If two contradict each other you need to look into it more to figure out the side that is right and to do that you need to find record of either a third opinion or definitive proof of which side is right. Being a historian isn't simple to answer questions they need evidence and their own mind do we even know if the past truly happened yes and no the recent past people from then are still alive including the teacher of this class. we don't know if any of the things that people tell us happened or not they most likely happened a lot of them we have evidence for but others we don't so we need definitive evidence before we start.

Most historians use tools that will help tell them about the past. They will use journals, maps, stories, and anything that is relevant to the time period. One thing that may complicate that is if they are not reliable or only tell part of the story. Then their view of history will be different.
