I drew an environmental scientist or biologist performing field work in a natural setting. They are taking a water sample from a creek and their colleague is working in the background. The gender of the scientist is not specified. The scientist is dressed in clothes suited to hiking.

I regularly visit the Australian Museum with my family and when I think of scientists I think of people studying and cataloguing the natural world. I previously studied environmental monitoring at TAFE so my most recent laboratory experience involved testing samples.

I enjoy watching nature documentaries and am interested in the natural world. I am most likely to read, listen to and watch science news that is related to these areas of science, and consequently when I think of science I think of fieldwork. I do not believe that gender or age should be a barrier to pursuing a career in science so I did not limit the gender of the character. I know that many studies are carried out as collaborations so I included a colleague in the picture.

Edit: I Hilary Taylor give full permission for the use of my image for the purposes of study.

In my drawing I represented a scientist actively working in a laboratory wearing a lab coat and glasses. This is the image which came to mind when I thought what is science and the work of scientists and how this can be represented in an image? The scientist is drawn in a laboratory setting as science is forever rapidly changing and progressing and the work of scientists involves hypothesizing and constant testing (this is shown in the chemicals the scientist is working with).

My image is not to be gender bias towards males, but perhaps influenced through children’s fiction when I was younger through movie character couture, and appealed in the humour of the ‘mad scientist’. Common in most stories, was an image of an eccentric white coated male working collaboratively in a science lab, with a similar depiction of Albert Einstein.

After viewing images of other real scientists in our first lecture I have come to learn that my perception of a scientist shouldn’t just be confined to a laboratory setting. The natural environment is rapidly changing through the evidence of evolution as seen in the three toed skinks and Hawaiian honeycreepers, this evidence cannot just be drawn from a laboratory, but through constant field work studies and sample testing. Perhaps my perception of a scientist will itself change through completing this unit EDUC109.

Edit: students are more than welcome to use my drawing for the assignment

Description
When asked to draw a scientist I immediately thought of a mad scientist, not necessarily Einstein but a scientist who is mad about their work. My scientist is wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and is not of a particular gender. They are standing at a lab bench mixing chemicals and causing chemical reactions which is making then excited.

Origin
My perception of a scientist comes from my experience of working as a lab assistant in a high school and the fun I have with students in the labs. the lab coat is what I wear everyday along with the science teachers I work with.

Conclusion
My drawing is a typical depiction of a scientist in a lab coat performing chemical experiments, however working and studying in the field of science I have broaden my outlook and realised the modern scientist stems away from the stereotype scientist in a white coat working with chemicals in a lab. As science is a broad field there is a vast difference in scientists appearances today.

You are welcomed to use my picture for the EDUC 109 assignment 1

My scientist resembles Albert Einstein/Doc from ‘Back to the Future’. I have also drawn him near his table with reaching for his equipment that he uses for experiments and a book/journal.

Whilst drawing my interpretation of a scientist, I was somehow reminded of Doc from a very popular sci-fi film called ‘Back To The Future’. I had remembered the scientist from that film that I watched when I was younger. I also thought about how scientists are very hardworking, curious and passionate about their jobs and always challenge their/others ideas.

After viewing this lecture, I have understood that my interpretation of a scientist should not just be only picturing them in a lab setting but more in a environmental setting as there are a variety of different scientist in all areas of expertise. Popular scientists that came to mind include Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. In fact, I had thought of a quote by Albert that I have integrated in my drawing. I hope to be enlightened in EDUC109 and expand my knowledge on all these types of scientists.

EDIT: I give permission for students to use my drawing for Assignment 1.

My Scientist resembles the mad scientist Rick, from the popular American Adult Animated Science Fiction TV Show, Rick and Morty. He is basically recognised as a crazy scientist, which is based more on the science of the future (Ex. Building portals, time travel etc.). I have always been a fan of scientist shows where they are portayed as crazy, wild, smart and fearless. A classic is Dexters Laboratory, which would have been my second idea for an image, since I was brought up watching him and forming the innocent stereotype at a very young age.

My image, I find, is sometimes the stereotype of what scientists are made out to be which is increadibly smart and crazy. I think that image of the crazy scientist is made because Science itself, challenges basic human ideals, including religion at times, which people dont understand, and therefore label as out of the ordinary, or crazy. I find it super interesting to hear people discuss, for example, how we got here on this earth, whether its the "big bang", or a higher power.
Science itself, in my opinion, is a form of art and challenge the human imagination. Every day we wake up and breathe in air and never question what each breath is doing to our bodies, or the CO2 we release and the impact that has on beings around us.

It is increadibly fascinating to challenge the idea that we just wake up and exist, and instead I wish I used more my curiosity to wonder about every little thing we do. I want to be able to question why im eating what im eating, and why im able to move the way we are. Also keeping in mind, where do we come from? We always talk about the concept of evolution, however its a very broad term for something so fascinating and complicated if one breaks it down.

I feel deep down there is a stigma which makes people believe that science is something super serious and quiet, and one cant "mess around" at times, which overall is true, but at the same time, one has to enjoy being curious and learning about what we do and who we are. I love the fact that kids shows and younger generations, including me back when I was being raised, that we were taught that science should be fun, and one should watch those silly shows with the crazy scientist and all the cartoons which shows a very fun stereotype for science, as well as the scientists themselves.

I personally really enjoy seeing the humour in science, hence why I chose Rick to represent what I make science out to be. It is meant to be fun, and although it should be taken very seriously at times, there are moments where one can enjoy a crazy scientist moment- even if it means putting mentos in coke.

I am very excited for this course this Semester, since I never had the opportunity to engage in science, and was never fully encouraged to question everything around me, which is such an important part of being human. I have high hopes and I really hope to be able to learn every day more and more about what we are and why were here!

The drawing below represents a typical scientist in their field of work. When creating this image the chemist ideal of a scientist came to mind, drawing on references of popular culture as well. The ‘crazy’ scientist image is portrayed heavily in media such as films and television shows. This image therefore influences society who have less concept and understanding of real scientists and the work they do. Automatically when the image of a scientist comes to mind the chemist is represented as they work in labs with chemicals and beakers. This only portrays a small portion of scientists and vast variety of work carried out. These concepts are portrayed through this image by the safety equipment, gloves, glasses, and coat, and the tools used on the bench. The idea of a ‘crazed’ scientist is portrayed through the hair, often in popular culture as grey and wild.

In conclusion, the image represented is typical to a simplistic idea from society. As the creator of this image, I myself have less knowledge of scientists and the types of work they all do. In this way, the image represents a basic understanding. In the real world, scientists work and study in fields of biology, geology, psychology and many more. One image cannot represent all different fields of science as they vary in such major ways. Biologists may be out in their field of work, differing to psychologists working with patients in an office environment. Through images from a range of people, we can see what understanding those of society have.
