Following this short reflection on space and the role of culture in textbooks and curricula, we would like to invite you to reflect on the cultural responsiveness of these "spaces" in your educational context. Have a conversation where you can begin by sharing observations and reflections you have made in the past or comment on the examples shared in the plenary.

Take turns speaking up! Share the space!

Step 1- Share. Share your own experiences when working with textbooks or curricula.

Step 2 - Reflect. Reflect on and discuss how the "white page and where the colour can go" influence the work within textbooks and curricula in your educational environment. Collect your reflections here on the Padlet.

Step 3 - Discuss. If time allows, exchange thoughts and ideas how textbooks and curricula might be used to create a culturally responsive space.

Inclusion in schools is truly a matter of great importance. Textbooks are often lacking in important information and diversity regarding the various cultural backgrounds that can consist the environment of a school. Integration should not be the main focus of education. Alas, being able to satisfy the ample educational needs of different students, with different capabilities and from different cultural backgrounds should be what school curriculas are striving for.

In Greece there are examples of references in textbooks which address diversity especially at the elementary level. Last year workshops of social skills were introduced in junior high school, where students can cultivate tolerance, empathy, solidarity and respect in every human being and human rights. In senior high school there is in curriculum references and topics that promote cultural understanding.
Inclusion is our priority for all students but can be implemented mostly by non formal or in-formal education..

How to include the culture in different subjects? - this is a challenging issue since all subject teachers can share the responsibility of promoting cultural diversity. I as a Biology teacher can ask students about the endemic living organisms in their own country of origin and in this way show respect to multiculturalism in class.

There has been some progress in textbooks ( Music books in High School present the musical tradition from Africa and other countries) but there's a lot to be done.
Textbooks should promote intercultural approach and avoid stereotypical presentation of people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Curricula should present the modern aspects of life around the world setting aside images from the past.

Inclusion should definitely be promoted. Sharing different cultural events could be an option. Accepting who our students are should be part of our curriculum. Textbooks shouldn't be confined to stereotypes. Materials should be enriched through other means. Provide extra materials possibly. Literature can prove to be extremely helpful here. Getting to know diverse people , accepting them and reconciliating with them and their culture is definitely what the goal should be. School celebrations can give ground to more diverse perspectives, proving to be a heterogenous space.
