When I was reading the article, I noticed some things in the regulation section that came as a surprise to me. For example, "Federal law does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe to FDA's satisfaction before they are marketed". You would think something so easily accessible would come with regulations and FDA approval, but this is not the case. It seems that the agency only looks once the product actually enters the marketplace, and not in the testing/production phase of the product.

Like anything, supplements are only good if consumed in moderation. One surprising fact from the article is that "some supplements can have unwanted effects before, during, or after surgery" because of their affects on bleeding/clotting and medication. Another surprising fact is that "Federal law does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe to FDA's satisfaction before they are marketed," which sounds like it could be very alarming, especially in a world almost governed by "big pharma." In my opinion, there should be some standards of how supplements are labeled, so consumers can be well informed of what they are buying and consuming.

While supplements usually have a small affect, reducing the risk of a substantial effect is a huge ordeal. It's also shocking to hear that the FDA does not need to approve of the safety of dietary supplements before they're retailed. Without knowing possible effects, it can potentially harm people.

It can be very dangerous for you to take these supplements especially if you don't consult with a medical professional beforehand.

Garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E may cause bleeding while kava and valerian may increase the effects of anesthetics. Because of this, it is important to discuss taking any dietary supplements with your healthcare provider.

There are a wide variety of dietary supplements available out in the market. An interesting thing associated with dietary supplements is the fact that they are not approved by the FDA which means there is very little regulation in what is in the supplements and to what they can claim to do. While some people may swear by certain supplements, I personally only take a daily women's multivitamin and iron supplements because I have low iron levels. I try my best to get all my essential vitamins and minerals from my diet but I think supplementing can be beneficial for some people.

Some of the reasonings included that the supplement contained pesticides or heavy metals. So while it's good that these supplements were recalled, it was concerning that they were released in the first place.

Apparently, the FDA can only monitor the safety of the product after the supplement is out in the marketplace. This is very concerning because dangerous supplements could potentially harm consumers.

I currently do not take dietary supplements, but I did take collagen peptides which are a form of dietary supplements. I also found it interesting that the FDA begins their review once the product is released to the public and can take action against a risky product. I can then make the assumption that if a product has been in the market for several years and is used and advertised by celebrities, then collagen peptides must be safe and healthy to use.

One fact I thought was interesting was that using supplements improperly could be harmful, for example some don't mix well together. I thought this was interesting because I feel like supplements are a very popular market and most of the time people buy them and self diagnose their supplements. I see this with my mom all the time. I had been prescribed a lot of supplements when working with my doctor and my mom would randomly buy the same supplements I was using because she felt like "she needed it too." I think it's common for a lot of people to randomly use supplements and most often they don't even really need them to begin with.
Another interesting fact about dietary supplements is how little the FDA regulates them, and people tend to know very little about what they are taking. I feel that this can either make some valuable supplements less credible and others to be a little too credible. Because I have used many that helped my body ( working with my doctor) for example she gave me magnesium and a cortisol stabilizer that helped my sleep issues. On the contrary, I have seen a ton on the market that I believe would to be false promises and health professionals probably wouldn't advise.

That just did not sit right to me because of how random these products might be and it just makes it not trustworthy. It just is kind of scary to think about and if people that actually buy them know this about the products.

One of the most surprising things I noticed from the article was the supplements it mentioned as having potentially negative side effects in correlation with a surgery. I would have never guessed that something like garlic or vitamin E could cause bleeding. It makes me realize that it is very important to mention these things to your doctor even if it seems minor. The article also describes supplements in a way that makes it seem as if there isn't much known about a lot of them. It makes me wonder how many people take supplements they shouldn't be taking or are mixing supplements that they shouldn't.

One of the more interesting facts I read in the article was that the FDA gets involved only after the supplement hits the market. This kind of scared me a little bit because I assumed that everything on the market was pretty much most likely FDA approved. After reading this article I definitely want to pay attention to the labels on the back of products. I love to take preworkout, a supplement that helps give energy and focus before the gym, but I’ve had bad experiences with certain brands.

Like a lot of people have agreed with, the most mind blowing fact that I read in FDA 101: Dietary Supplements was the fact that the FDA does not get involved in making sure a product is safe until its already widely marketed. I had no idea that federal law does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe to FDA's standards before they are marketed. This really makes me question a lot of market exercise supplements, such as preworkout. But, It now makes sense to me why I keep hearing about banned preworkouts. The fact that a ton of people have been taking these supplements assuming that there was some sort of approval by the FDA and then subsequently take high dosages of dangerous chemicals is mind blowing. This makes me think about "Dark Matter" and all of the other products the contained high dosages of DHAA before being banned.

The most interesting fact that I found in the article: "FDA 101: Dietary Supplements" is that "In general, FDA's role with a dietary supplement product begins after the product enters the marketplace. That is usually the agency's first opportunity to take action against a product that presents a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury, or that is otherwise adulterated or misbranded." I found this extremely interesting because it allows people to be harmed due to misinformation and negligence to their health and safety. Action only takes place after the product is sold which does not provide any safety to people who have taken the dietary supplement before the FDA becomes involved.

Dietary supplements are a long and vague category of things people can buy to improve a certain part of their health. There are dietary supplements for nearly every single part of the human body workings that can be improved. One thing I did not know is that not all dietary supplements are safe, such as supplements used to improve muscle and other aspects of the physique. Some supplements that are sold in the store are not 100% what they say they are and many athletes have failed drug tests or performance enhancing drug tests due to the non accuracy in some supplements sold in the store. I think dietary supplements are good to a certain extent, but at some point it is better just to let the natural body do it’s thing.

I found it very interesting how supplements do not have to be FDA approved. This is crazy to me because many people rely on supplements and do not know what is in them. It leads me to question how much good is actually in them and whether or not they are actually as beneficial as promoted.

The most interesting thing I read in the article was that dietary supplement manufacturers do not need FDA approval to release their products to the market. The FDA only gets involved if there are major issues reported by people taking the supplements. That means that taking a supplement that is new to the market could be more harmful than helpful, and the people taking them might be guinea pigs for the safety of that product.

The most interesting thing from the article was the fact that supplements aren't FDA approved prior to release to the public. The amount of people I know that take a wide array of supplements is rather large. Not that I know for a fact, but those that I know more personally, I would say do not consult with their doctors prior to consuming these supplements. As a matter of fact, I myself, back fresh out of high school, took quite a few supplements without consulting my doctor prior to starting them. Hindsight 20/20, I'd say I should have due to some side effects I experienced.

The most interesting thing that I read from FDA 101: Dietary Supplements, was that dietary supplements also include amino acid products. I recently started taking a pre-workout before going to the gym everyday that has the words "amino acid" written in big fonts on the container. I never realized that pre-workout was considered a dietary supplement. After reading the article, it made complete sense. I also found it really interesting that manufacturers are allowed to label their products however they want for marketing purposes even if the claims are false.

It is scary to think that harmful ingredients could be within the supplements if they are not properly manufactured. I think that this article was also interesting because it tells you to lookout for potential harmful/bogus supplements.
