I am absolutely grateful for the organizational tools this class has shared with me. It's been very helpful to get an idea of the work ahead while also helping to structure when and how to do it all.
Personally I have a tendency to fixate on things and keep tweaking till they're perfect Many times I've lost out on good nights of sleep because of this tendency coupled with generally procrastinating when I have a lot of things to do.
I have definitely been trying to do parts of my lectures standing up while on zoom calls. I've found it helps me not get too restless while wee all stuck at home instead of in class.
Wellness has always been a priority for me and I hope with continuing additions of new tools to be successful.

Week 3- Group Work and Conflict

This was a fun week. Doing breakout room chats with icebreakers and other activities was very enjoyable and helped to get to know some schoolmates better. When tasked to make a company up we definitely got stuck in the storming phase and came up with many different concepts, using up most of our time that way. Due to this we had a somewhat pieced together presentation but it was ultimately effective as we did achieve the task.
In group work I could personally gain from being more assertive with my ideas, I have a tendency to downplay my input or lack confidence in my delivery at first.
The most important soft-skills for me are good communication, empathy, accountability and assertiveness.

I found an interesting article on the ideals of professionalism being rooted in a history that favoured only a certain type of individual. It's an interesting and expansive take on how to dismantle the current standard of 'Professionalism'. Here is an excerpt;
"At the Center for Ethnic, Racial, and Religious Understanding at Queens College (CERRU), I've come up with an initial framework for equitable workplace standards. It allows workers from ethnic and racial backgrounds to co-create shared work environments based on the following tenets that elevate historically marginalized people:

Do seek out renowned process facilitators to foster awareness of implicit bias and white supremacy culture in professional, managerial, and workplace cultures.

Don’t expect a one-time implicit bias workshop or panel to undo years of inequity. Do ongoing work with consultants who specialize in white supremacy culture to create human resources policies and procedures that at a minimum: embrace cultural differences in dress, speech, and work style; evaluate traditionally accepted professional tenets of workplace success, such as timeliness, schedules, leadership style, and work style; center traditionally marginalized voices in assessments; and examine hiring, firing, promotion practices, and work culture in real time. Don’t expect this work to be cheap or quick."

(full article linked above)

Week 4- Soft Skills & Professionalism

The soft skill I could use the most work with is communication when under stress. So, stress management has a lot to do with how to achieve this. I've had 2 unfortunate car accidents where i've had head injuries and it has changed the way my body responds to stress. Sometimes the reaction is too much and other times there is no reaction at all. A big part of this growth and finding balance and well being in managing stress is keeping good nutrition and healthy sleep habits. I've noticed when I lose track with those things I tend to be more on edge and can miscommunicate. Staying consistent with myself and allotting time through organizational systems like the ones shared in week two are also very helpful. Like all skills, it takes practice, method, and effort.

Working on this soft skill with in turn help with professionalism. It is very important to be thoughtful and tactful when communicating with others regardless of set and setting. All aspects of life reflect on how a person will be perceived and being aware of the ramifications of your words and actions is important.

Week 5- Ethics part 1

Ethics is the study of morality. However ethics are generally objective while morality is more subjective. Morals are cultural, personal, societal. Depending on time, place and topic, the rights and wrongs of a situation can greatly differ. It is a complex topic, as obviously showcased by our in class discussions about the apple or the 5 dollar bill.

Not all individuals are willing to see things in a different perspective from their own, in order to make global decisions in a utilitarian manner. This makes ethics and morality a prime aspect of where the dissonance and polarity come from when faced with everyday situations that involve oppositional perspectives. If morality could be seen in the same way throughout the world, would it be a better place?
This makes me think of theology and how religions have tried to do the same thing through doctrine, which has had great impact on the world both constructive and destructive. In general there is no finite definition for Ethics and Morality because they are aspects and reflections of current society. The definition will continue to shift as time goes by.

In this day and age of transparency, if we look at the ever changing culture of the internet, it is easy to see how quickly information can be brought to the attention of the masses. Sometimes this information may not always be accurate. It is hard to keeping people from receiving misinformation, even though we see efforts through companies like, instagram/facebook, to control what is being shared.

A few days after our class the I heard that the US is now deeming spreading misinformation surrounding Covid or the accusations of election fraud will be seen as an act of Terrorism. Here is an article from February 9th on the subject if you'd like to learn further, https://www.oleantimesherald.com/news/nation/dhs-issues-terrorism-advisory-against-offenders-who-spread-misinformation-about-election-fraud-covid-19/article_570ebcdb-fc4d-5d3e-8ff0-c06252eb0275.html

It's an interesting topic with a lens on the United States. Consider, freedom of speech, consequence of action, and fair treatment to all. Then add in the anti-terror act, which practically nullifies all of those things, it makes this truly an interesting ethical quandary with no no clear answer.

This weeks lecture had many points that personally spoke to me. I was aware of the addictive nature of apps such as instagram and after 2020 I had formed an almost constant need to grab for my phone to check it. I frankly wanted to remember how life felt before instagram. So, I decided in November 2021 to disable my account for the foreseeable future. It's honestly been very nice, less stressful. I did enjoy aspects of social media, but I think I'm better off without it.

Week 7- Appreciating Diversity

I brought this up in class but wished expand further as I shared this video as a reference to him, then watched it after class and the points he touches on are perfectly in line with this weeks topic. Albeit, an extreme example, Daryl Davis' story really inspires me and is quite poignant to the topic of appreciating diversity. His message is a powerful and hopeful example of how staying open and curious about other peoples beliefs and cultural practices, free from bias or judgment, having the difficult conversations, enduring the teaching moments, all in order to understand and learn from one another, can amount to positive change. Or at least, it will amount to a constructive and more purposeful way to go about facing the plethora of cultural divides we see in our world. These ideologies permeate into all aspects of life but especially into the workforce. The ability to build relationships by way of mutual respect for our differences and find common ground, well, it can change peoples entire perspective on how things are or how they ought to be. In my opinion, appreciating diversity, even when facing an adversary will always have value.

It was a fun assignment and enjoyable to learn about my peers through their projects. Also thank you for sharing your story about finding your passion to teach through your passion for skateboarding, it was neat to learn that about you. It had a great flow, well timed scoring, curious if you did schooling in graphic design or filmmaking, or if its just an innate talent?

As per my favourite topic so far, im not good with favourites. My personal passion for philosophy and culture made the past few weeks quite enjoyable to converse and share ideas with everyone. Overall enjoying the course so far in general.
