I’ve always been a believer and practitioner of routines. What I learned from the article are two reasons and a bonus. First, it reduces de volume of data to promote attention. Second, it helps also the attention with social reinforcement. And as a bonus, it helps the teacher learning as well.

I really liked the discussion of routine based in science. I think particularly for middle-school brains, I completely identify with their research about reducing the cognitive load with routine by reducing the "competition for student's attention" so as to increase their availability to pay attention to the daily learning a teacher is providing. - Kelsey A.

The routine I like is for my beginning of class. When students walk in, there is some type of warm up on the board (puzzle, find my mistake, etc.) there is also a list of things to get out for our daily work and I tell them how to set their notebooks up for the day. By the time the bell rings, they should be in their seats with those things out completing the warm up. - Kelsey A.

Something Admin could do better for me, but truly for all the teachers in our building, is to ask for feedback, listen, and implement suggestions. I set a timer to countdown the time until students need to be in their seats. This allows them time to socialize before class while giving them a non-verbal cue showing them when I expect them to follow the expectation.

My call and response is I say "tootsie roll" and they respond"lolipop, we were talking now let's stop". I also use "materials are sleeping" during projects when I want their attention to give directions and to stop what they are doing. I think follow through would go a long way for teachers in my building. I think we all know that not everything we want can happen or is possible, but I think we would feel more supported if the issues we bring up have a "why" behind why can't be done or even an "I hear you, and still don't have a solution but I'm trying." So often I feel like my worries and want for feedback or support have fallen off of my admin's radar leaving me feeling forgotten, frustrated and alone. -Sarah

The best thing a principal has done for me is provide all of his feedback in terms of "Glows" and "Grows". He was also a very welcoming person, so that made me value his feedback a lot.

I think that great administrators are able to wear different hats effectively. They should be good at observing what's happening in class AND identifying areas that a teacher can feasibly improve in, they should be able to partner with teachers to help them improve and advance school initiatives, and they should be able to organize all the systematic needs of a school while also providing fair evaluations. Doing all of this while also keeping every happy and all the politics of the school in check is very difficult.

At my school, we have a consistent expectation across all classes: the first and last five minutes of class, students need to be at a level zero, independently working on their Do Now and Exit Ticket. Establishing routines like this across the grade level helps create consistency and structure for students, making it easier for them to settle into their work and stay focused.

At my school, while we have dedicated principals, the support and acknowledgment from the higher administration when it comes to curriculum and structure decisions could be stronger. This sometimes makes it challenging for staff to feel fully aligned with leadership. However, our team works hard to stay united by holding weekly meetings, which ensure that we are all on the same page and maintain consistent expectations.

I've always put a big emphasis into having established routines, but I never realized or thought about the neurological connection to routines. The routines help the amount of stimuli in the prefrontal cortex and therefore help students attention on learning! :) - Katie

Procedures for routines are always visually posted for students on slides, practiced and followed daily. One examples, when students come in after recess, they go to their table for "rest and reset" time, do that and come to the carpet when the timer is up without me saying anything - Katie

I think one way admin could support us better is to listen to the feedback of the teachers -- especially regarding PLCs. I think PLCs can be a beneficial thing, but not weekly when we sit around "what should we talk about today". If it was less frequent, and we had more time in between to gather data about a topic to share, it would be more meaningful! - Katie
