Psychological research offers many benefits to society:
Research on psychoactive drugs is very important in treatment of mental health.

- The McCrane report estimated the direct costs of mental health at £22.5 billion a year. 'The number of people recieving medication provides a much greater economic gain than psychological therapies, which may produce similar benefits compared to medication but are far more expensive'.

- Bowlby's research on emotional deprivation offered a range of benefits to society. The United Nations Children's Fund says, 'no one disputes that food and nutrition are vital for a baby's health and welfare... but what about stimulation and a sense of security?

There could be instances whereby not carrying out research could result in negative outcomes in society.
- simply by asking a research question may be damaging to members of a particular racial group or sexual orientation because it appears to add scientific credibility to prevailing prejudice just by asking the question.

There are some examples of socially sensitive research:
- Dr Hamers Gay Gene
It is socially sensitive due to its social implications.

Psychologists manage ethical risks in research through the development of professional guidelines for the conduct of their studies.

In the UK, psychologists are bound by guidelines of the British Psychological Society ( The Code of Ethics and Conduct - BPS 2009 ).
