Add enough water to loosen the mixture, then reduce the heat to low cook for a few more minutes or until slightly thickened.

The type of clothes worn in Sudan are similar to those worn in Egypt, Libya and Ethiopia. Most individual Sudanese wear either traditional or western attire. A traditional garb widely worn in Sudan is the jalabiva , which is a loose-fitting, long-sleeved, collarless ankle-length garment also common to Egypt. The jalabiya is accompanied by a large scarf worn by women, and the garment may be white, colored, striped, and made of fabric varying in thickness, depending on the season of the year and personal preferences.

Many factors come into play in a region like Sudan, in which religion, status, climate and way of life all affect how one dresses.

The story in the Koran which tells the tale of Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his first-born son to Allah resonates strongly with people of the Islamic faith. So strongly that believers around Sudan slaughter sheep and hold great feasts with family and friends. The festival usually lasts for two to three days, during which time there are several trips to the mosque.

Sudan has a transitional government, as it is supposedly moving from a military junta to a presidential system. The new constitution went into effect after being passed by a national referendum in June 1998. The president is both chief of state and head of government. He appoints a cabinet (which is currently dominated by members of the NIF). There is a unicameral legislature, the National Assembly, which consists of 400 members: 275 elected by the populace, 125 chosen by an assembly of interests called the National Congress (also dominated by the NIF). However, on 12 December 1999, uneasy about recent reductions in his powers, President Bashir sent the military to take over the National Assembly.

The Sudanese have a very formal way of greeting people and expect foreigners to respond in a similar manner. The host generally inquires about the visitor, his family, his health and his general well-being. After this the Sudanese host will begin to discuss business. It is considered impolite to inquire about the hosts wife at any point, especially coming from a westerner.

When two males meet it is expected that they shake hands and tap each other’s shoulder at the same time. Women on the other hand will hug and occasionally rub cheeks with one and other.

When a person visits the home of a Sudanese person they will be commooffered with refreshments and snacks. They are not asked if they would like them but presented with them and it is up to the visitor if they consume them or not.

If a person is invited to somebodies house for dinner the way they are invited must be done in a certain way. For example a man must clarify if the invitation is for also his wife. Then dinner is served at 9 o clock or 930. After dinner tea is served and shortly after the visitors must leave. It is courtesy of the host to offer second servings to the visitor as they are very concerned about pleasing them.

At the dinner table men and women sit on opposite sides of the room and it is considered rude for a western man to point his feet at an arab. When beaconing someone it is also considered highly disrespectful to point at someone. The way it is politely done is facing your palm down and gesturing to come here

The Mouse and the Beetle – a Sudanese Proverb with a Folktale

The dung beetle saw its son on the wall and said these are pearls put together on a string.

Though the dung beetle is ugly, to his mother he is as lovely and beautiful as pearls beads strung together on a thread. This proverb implies that parental love can be blind. There is a short folktale called The Mouse and the Beetle relating to this proverb.

It once happened that a mouse married a beetle. One day when the beetle went down to the river to wash her shamla (a rag of wool or goat hair used by Sudanese women to cover their bodies when having a smoke bath), a strong habuub suddenly blew and swept away the shamla, together with the beetle who was clinging on to it tightly. The gust of wind threw the beetle on an island in the river, leaving her feeling shocked and bewildered. By coincidence, a boy from the house where the mouse and the beetle had their hole was passing near the shore. When the beetle saw him, she called out in her loudest voice:

‘Hey you! Young, long-necked man, tell the tale! Tell him, my master of the long tail that the finest lady has fallen into tragedy.’ Upon hearing the voice, the youth turned left and right but could not see who was making the sound. He returned home and informed his mother that he had heard a cry coming from the island that said: ‘Hey you! Young, long-necked man, tell the tale! Tell him, my master of the long tail that the finest lady has fallen into tragedy.’

The mouse, who happened to be peeping through the opening of its hole, heard their conversation, and felt a rising sense of disapproval that his mistress had turned them into objects of ridicule amongst the worthy and the unworthy, and that she was now the subject of gossip. So he rushed to the river, swam to the island and returned with his wife on his back. When they were very close to their house, the beetle saw her children sitting near each other and she proudly said to her husband:

‘Look how beautiful our children are. They are pearls put together on a string.‘

The mouse laughed and lifted up his chest in a bragging manner. ‘maasha! Allah! As God has willed it. Actually this is how the angel’s children look like!’

The flag of South Sudan was adopted following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War. The flag was previously used as the flag of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. The flag bears striking similarities with both the flags of Sudan (from which Southern Sudan seceded in 2011), and Kenya. It shares the black, white, red, and green of the Sudanese flag (though different symbolism is given to the colours), in addition to having a chevron along the hoist. The horizontal black, white, red, and green bands of the flag share the same design as the Kenyan flag, and the Pan-African symbolism thereof.
Read more at http://southsudanflag.facts.co/southsudanflagof/southsudanflag.php#pzBdZUmHmqelJS7o.99

Traditionally, the focus for Sudanese people has been the local village or nomadic community. These relatively small communities are made up of extended families based on lineage of male relatives and ancestors. The members of a lineage act in the group's interest, safeguarding territory or forming important ties with other families by marriage. Usually a family leader is a respected elder.

For people in the north who are herders, family status still depends on the size of the herd. In settled villages, certain families hold the rights to own land. In the past, colonial governments sometimes gave powerful positions to certain families. These family groups have gradually become part of the modern political system, but traditional ideas about power and status endure.
Most Sudanese families hold strong traditional values in a rapidly changing world. Whether in rural or urban society, the woman's world has been largely domestic and the man's world public. From everyday meals to formal socializing, such as a wedding feast, men and women are segregated. Men and women lead far less separate lives in the south. It is difficult to say how years of war, famine and migration have changed families in Sudan. Some rural Sudanese have recently moved to cities, where family and ethnic groups mix at school and work. Upper-class families living in big cities like Khartoum and Omdurman tend to be closely connected to the government, business and the professions.

.

Northern Sudanese have more access to education and economic opportunities and generally are better off than southerners. In the south, many of the upper class and politically powerful are Christian and attended missionary schools. In many Sudanese tribes, class and social status are traditionally determined by birth, although in some cases it took a good deal of savvy by the upper classes to maintain their positions. Among the Fur group, ironworkers formed the lowest rung of the social ladder and were not allowed to intermarry with those of other classes.
