District 8 Meeting by Kristin Beller

As we think about the end of this school year and the beginning of the next quickly approaching, we need to develop clear, shared understandings about the needs public school workers will require to protect themselves, their students and their families. We cannot count on any local or state government entity to think of all the ways we need protection or all the ways our students may need academic or emotional support. WE are the body that must be creating space for us to have conversations with each other that center our needs.

If a student tests positive in a class, will all students (and the teacher) be quarantined for 14 days or will negative tested students return to class the asap. How will we ensure students are tested? If a class is quarantined, and they return to class after 14 days, will they participate in virtual learning while home? And then, if another student/teacher is positive, do students return home yet again? This seems like a very chaotic learning experience, even more so than simply resuming all classes online for students.

Teachers deserve the right to choose to work from home or in the classroom. Teachers should be polled asap as to their workplace choice and principals should plan accordingly in their building. Principals can schedule (and hire) around their school's learning needs and plan accordingly, employing some teachers as virtual teachers and some as in-school teachers. If data shows that contracting Co-vid is highly possible in August, teachers (and students) cannot be forced to work in a building with unsafe conditions.

We need to educate parents on their choices asap in order to ensure that we don't lose students to online private and homeschools. Parents are considering leaving public school because of fear that their child will have to return to the building.

How do we implement a more restrictive environment where less fortunate students are not prevented from having the same learning opportunities. Simply not allowing peers to share pencils can inhibit learning. At my campus, we have been directed the past that under no circumstances can a pencil purchased by the school be given to a child. I will not sit idly by while a student simply watches others learn for lack of pencil. The advantages many of our students have is a reflection of inequality.

Up to 13% of the pediatric population infected with Covid-19 are asymptomatic for the entirety of their infection. The remaining 87% that do go on to develop symptoms do so after a 2 to 14 day period of being asymptomatic before they show symptoms. Half of the children infected have mild and non-specific symptoms. The actual prevalence of SARS-COV-2 in the population is unknown. Screening each child prior to entering the building each day would be a Herculean task. Duke University Health System screens everyone as they attempt to enter their buildings. They estimate that the initial screening takes one to two minutes per person. My school has 1675 students. If we utilize 9 entrances that would take 90 minutes. How much is it going to cost for 5 to 10 no-touch thermometers for each building? How do we maintain 6' between kids in line for 90 minutes outside the building? What do we do with the first kid in the building for that 90 minutes? Our economies of scale in constructing bigger and bigger buildings is working against us.

At that point, teachers would be doing double duty making face-to-face lessons and remote lessons on the same content, but with different modalities. How do siblings fit in the equation? How about siblings on different campuses?
