One new understanding I gained from this lesson was that while they weren’t treated as such while they were working long hours in textile mills they were definitely still children, playing and acting as such. I noticed this from the picture in station 2 and the games in station 1.

Compared to todays children of the 21st Century, we have a lot more opportunities and resources than most and are a lot more privileged to live in a world where youth does not have to work for their family to survive.

i gained a better understanding on how hard children worked back then. There wasn’t really a limit on the age when they started working compared to how things are now. i feel that it is really important to see how different it was back then compared to how it is now.

I learned that the 20th century was very difficult for children then and they had very limited opportunities compared to us now. It was a social norm to work and have obligations at such a young age while we have more free will and laws set into place, where we can only work for a certain amount of time at a certain age.

One new understanding I have about children in the 20th century is how long they had to work. I knew they had to work a lot but 16 hour days at 9 years old is crazy to think about considering how things are now. Children’s attitudes towards work are so much different now because they are not NEEDED to work like they were back then.

One new understand I have about children’s lives in the 20th century is that they had time to play games and the games that they played are similar to/the same the games we play now. I didn’t realize that they had free time because I just associated their free time with sleep or house work. I also found it interesting that they have similar games to what we have now.

alyssa- one new understanding that i gained from learning about this topic is that children back then really did have a hard life. i remember from one of the videos that was played some little girl said that she used to end her work days at 9pm which is just crazy to me because that’s the time i’m usually going to bed.
