Why is font so important in media? Using terminology, typography is the style in which printed text is presented. This is extremely important when it comes to genre. Printed text is what the viewer will be reading (especially headlines/titles which are the pulls(for example in magazines)). If the genre is more formal the the iconography for this font is typically "Serif". This is when the font on each letter has little flicks on them (none of the fonts I have chosen), whereas if the genre is less formal like my own, it is conventional for "Serif-sans", this is like the fonts that consist below where the letters are very rounded and don't look fancy or draw too much attention to themselves (can vary depending on genre and creativity).
As stated font is important but also to link with font is font spacing (also known as "tracking") between letters. The spaces between the letters can have and effect on the reader where the spacing effects the pace of reading and density of the text on the page/screen (depending on platform that the audience is viewing the content on). Commonly, if there is large spaces between letters, then there is less content and the main focus of the item will most likely be a central image. The genres with less space between letters can normally fit a lot more on a media product which makes it more lively and to some audiences more appealing. These conventions I have laid out however are not for definite as more genres are becoming mainstream, more genres are mixing creating new genres with new conventions.

While testing fonts for my Media Digi-pack and Magazine Advert, I was referring myself back to my band (Imagine Dragons) I decided to go for the the San-Serif font that they use for their band logo. they use a very San-Serif style that is very neat and tidy which slightly goes against the alternative genre of the band but fits very well.
The spacing between the text is also needed to be considered. In the band logo which is used across all digipacks and adverts has the text close together and in some letters they connect to make the text flow but not to feel like they are one big jumbled up word. For the title of the Digipack, the text is thinner and very distinguishable for the logo (Like in the digipack below)

I have decided to trace the imagine dragons logo font for the 'Imagine Dragons' title on the digi-pack as it is conventional for the band (it is thought that the logo font for Imagine Dragons is heavily based and modified from the font 'ITC Avant Garde Gothic'). However, since I have decided to change the name of the album from 'Evolve' to 'Walking The Wire' this means I have to find a font which I think will contrast with the mail logo but also that doesn't seem too outlandish. AS i am tracing however this means I can be flexible with my font.

Using the album cover as a reference, I have pulled these fonts (with different spacing) to view to a few of my peers (Jamie, Shannon, Tobi, Amberlie and Elliot) to see which they prefer.

Jamie - "I didn't like the Number 2 Appendix's. They seem to bubble like and wouldn't fit into the Alternative genre. I think a more relevant font would be one of the number 1 appendix's, more specifically, 1B. Although there seems to not be much difference between 1A and 1B, I defiantly think that 1B would be better as it is closer together and seems to be more conventional to the original album which you (Cameron/myself) showed to me."

Shannon - "Personally I am not a fan of any of the selection. I think there should be a wider choice of fonts to choose from. If i had to choose a one which i preferred the best I would go with 3C. I like how it stands out and fits with the plain theme of the original Imagine Dragons Evolve digi-pack."

Tobi - "I am not a huge fan of the Alternative genre myself. Although I do like the simplicity of 1A and how it keeps the simplicity of digi-pack. I think it would possibly work better if the spacing was a bit further apart but not as much as 1C."

Amberlie - "I like the number 4 appendix's because of the boldness Serif style but I also like how on the letter 'I' how it feels to be slightly Serif-San."

Elliot - "I don't like how bold the number 2-4 appendix's. Personally I prefer any of the number 1 appendix's because they look slimmer. I also like the look of the number 4 appendix's but not 4B. I don't think it would work because the spacing is too close together so the letters look molded together."

Conclusion

After analyzing the information from my peers. I believe that they preferred the further apart spacing typography or the original (Appendix's A's + B's). I think the bigger spacing feels more to be in a different genre than the Alternative. I also like the slight formal side of the font which appeals to the "evolve" text on the front of the original digi-pack. Taking in information from my peers I will consider adding more space between the letters in the font. This would go against convention of my genre slightly but would also works with Nicholas Abercrombie's Media theory that ''the boundaries between genres are shifting and becoming more permeable we are getting more hybrids and sub-genres as texts cross between categories to maximize audience appeal."
