 *Six Brandenburg Concertos
  • Many Baroque composers wrote dozens of concertos, but Bach managed to sum up the entire genre with only six.
  • Each featuring a different line-up of soloists with a wide range of moods and even structures (shocking in an era when concertos were supposed to have three movements: fast–slow–fast). 

* Four Orchestral Suites
  • Alongside the concerto, the other genre in vogue in Bach's time was the orchestral suite (or 'overture' as he called it). 
  • All four of Bach's have a kind of courtly nobility, beyond that they range enormously: 
  1. Suite No. 1 in C major, BWV 1066
  2. Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067
  3. Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068
  4. Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069
* Organ Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV542
  • Bach was particularly admired for his keyboard skills, not least his knack for improvisation
  • Leaving aside the most famous organ work of all, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor (which some doubt is by Bach at all), one of the most brilliant works is his Fantasia and Fugue in G minor.

* Cantata No.21
  • Bach's cantatas (nearly 200 sacred and a good-handful of secular ones survive) are all the most remarkable 
  • Cantata No.21 is one of the most beautiful. Its text is a popular subject in the Lutheran tradition.

* The Well-tempered
  • A set of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys (together, 48 works).

* Goldberg Variations
  •  His music is so endlessly compelling, or, as with the Goldberg Variations (purportedly written to soothe an insomniac nobleman to sleep), you can just enjoy it.
  • Designed for harpsichord, but equally enthusiastically claimed by pianists, it consists of a lyrical theme with 30 variations, lasting about an hour.

-He was born in the town of Eisenach, Germany, to Johann Ambrosius Bach and Maria Elisabeth Lammerhirt. 


2. Musical numbers in Bach's works

-Bach was fond of incorporating the numbers 14 and 41 into his musical works, because they were derived from the mystical numerology values of the letters in his own name.
-We're not quite sure how that ended up as 'Air on a G-string', but his works are littered with references to those numbers.

3. Bach in prison

-Career-wise, it wasn't always plain sailing for JS Bach.
-In fact, one of his employers was so intent on hanging on to him that he had Bach imprisoned for daring to hand in his resignation. Still, Bach made good use of the time and composed some studies for organ while he was inside.

4. Bach's death

-Everyone knows that Beethoven suffered with his hearing, but not so many people are aware that Bach struggled terribly with his eyesight. -In fact, botched surgery on his eyes by the English ocular specialist John Taylor reportedly caused Bach's death in 1750.

- Johann Ambrosius, Bach’s father worked as the town musician in Eisenach, and it is believed that in the very young age, he taught Johann to play the violin.
- At the age of 7, Bach went to school that where he received religious instruction and studied Latin.
- His older brother Johann Christoph who was a church organist in Ohrdruf, took him join in to his church.
- Bach stayed with his brother's family until he had turn into age of 15.
- Bach had a gift from God for having beautiful soprano singing voice, which helped him land a place at a school in Lüneburg. 
- After his puberty hits him, Bach switched to play the harpsichord and the violin because his voice changed.
-  Bach’s reputation grows rapidly because of his great technical skill that landed him the position of organist at the New Church in Arnstadt.
-  In the special events as well as giving music instruction, he was also responsible for providing music for religious services. 
-  Bach did not get along well with his students and was scolded by church officials for not rehearsing them frequently enough because of his personality at being an independent and sometimes an arrogant young man.
- In 1705, he disappeared for several months while he only officially received a few weeks' leave from the church.
- Then at 1707, Bach leave Arnstadt for an organist position at the Church of St. Blaise in Mühlhausen but doesn’t turn out well as he had planned. 
-  One of Bach's most famous works from this time is the cantata "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit," also known as "Actus Tragicus."
-  He wrote many church cantatas and some of his best compositions for the organ while working for the duke.
-  During his time at Weimar, Bach wrote "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," one of his most popular pieces for the organ. He also composed the cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat," or Heart and Mouth and Deed. One section of this cantata, called "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" in English, is especially famous.
-  Bach devoted much of his time to instrumental music, composing concertos for orchestras, dance suites and sonatas for multiple instruments
-  He also wrote pieces for solo instruments, including some of his finest violin works.
- His secular compositions still reflected his deep commitment to his faith with Bach often writing the initials I.N.J. for the Latin In Nomine Jesu, or "in the name of Jesus," on his sheet music.
-  He was required to teach at the Thomas School as a part of his position as well. 
- Bach also created musical interpretations of the Bible using choruses, arias and recitatives. 
-  This musical composition, written in 1727 or 1729, tells the story of chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew. The piece was performed as part of a Good Friday service.
- By 1740, Bach was struggling with his eyesight, but he continued to work despite his vision problems.
-  He was even well enough to travel and perform, visiting Frederick the Great, the king of Prussia in 1747. He played for the king, making up a new composition on the spot. Back in Leipzig, Bach refined the piece and gave Frederick a set of fugues called "Musical Offering."
- In 1749, Bach started a new composition called "The Art of Fugue," but he did not complete it. 
- He tried to fix his failing sight by having surgery the following year, but the operation ended up leaving him completely blind. Later that year, Bach suffered a stroke. He died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750.
- During his lifetime, Bach was better known as an organist than a composer. Few of his works were even published during his lifetime. 
-  He was an expert storyteller as well, often using melody to suggest actions or events. In his works, Bach drew from different music styles from across Europe, including French and Italian. 
- He used counterpoint, the playing of multiple melodies simultaneously, and fugue, the repetition of a melody with slight variations, to create richly detailed compositions.
- He is considered to be the best composer of the Baroque era, and one of the most important figures in classical music in general.
- Little personal correspondence has survived to provide a full picture of Bach as a person. But the records do shed some light on his character.
- In 1706, he married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach. The couple had seven children together, some of whom died as infants. 
-  Maria died in 1720 while Bach was traveling with Prince Leopold. 
-  The following year, Bach married a singer named Anna Magdalena Wülcken. They had thirteen children, more than half of them died as children.
- Bach clearly shared his love of music with his children. From his first marriage, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach became composers and musicians. Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach and Johann Christian Bach, sons from his second marriage, also enjoyed musical success.
