In terms of negative talk, I hear it all the time. I ignore the students who are saying things for attention. However, I have seen this statement work "If your artwork isn't turning out how you want it to, ask for help. Otherwise, keep the negative comments to yourself because they are not helping us." That has always shut down negative talk in my class.

Check out this resource - https://theinspiredclassroom.com/. There are free resources as well as training SEAL - Social Emotional Artistic Learning. There is also a Youtube page a FB group. One of the suggestions from this group is taking one day a week to make art - some unstructured and some with a purpose. Students could make artist trading cards to share with other classmates. We made cards about our school's character trait lessons and traded them with others.

KENNA! I had the same idea yesterday! I even titled it a Mindful Minute! Transitions in and out of the Art Studio for my students are always such a struggle, especially in the beginning of the year! So i want to do a Mindful Minute at the beginning and end of Art. I downloaded an app called Kids Breath and it has a purple star with a face on the icon and it's loaded with short breathing exercises and mindful activities to get kids calm before their teacher arrives. -Ashley

You can buy them at Walmart for under $20. Here is video link. for how it works.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnNATiWYyx0

At the end of each session, I would walk my students through guided imagery, allowing them a small change to take a nap at school. All students by the end, were beyond refreshed and excited for the next class and opportunity to do this again. I've utilized similar methods in my gen. ed. classroom with tremendous success.
