I finally discovered my essay topic with the first draft title being "To what extent would the criminalisation of prostitution impact the UK."

The reason behind me choosing this topic is because I think it provided an interesting argument against society and when I asked people their opinions or sex work it was all negative and surrounded by stigmas. So I set off to write an essay with evaluative research to decide whether prostitution is inherently harmful to society or its workers.

I started planing out my essay and separating my points etc.

Positive Impacts of criminalising prostitution.

Prostitution isn’t safe for the sex workers, as it’s not monitored by tge government and is usually paid i cash meaning that it canno’t be traced, therefore endangering sex workers.

Lower the risk of sexually transmitted diseases being spread across the public? Therefore increasing public safety

Tarnish the reputation of a place, i.e london has a large tourism market.. Compare to countries like thai land where it is all legal

This was backed up by research into the pros and cons of prostitution
https://www.theweek.co.uk/59604/prostitution-the-pros-and-cons-of-decriminalisation

Negative Impact of criminilsation of prostitution.

Safety of the UK public - Criminalising the sale of sex could potentially lead to an increase in sexual offences such a rape and sexual harassment. This would be linked to a research journal conducted in Sweden which saw how the banning of prostitution lead to a direct increase in rape cases.

Liberty - Surely its better if we can live in a country where we can do things that won't harm you, rather than living in a society where the state dictates everything we do.

Potential Solution to the problem

Alternative approaches to banning prositituion as a whole - Have it safely monitored by the government, so that people can be kept safe whilst continuing to work and earn a living, similar to how in the Netherlands prostituion is regulated and subject to income tax

I decided to change my draft questions in week 5 as I found it too specific so I changed it to "Should sex work be criminalised in the UK" As this way I could explore different countries legal models such as The Netherlands, Sweden and Germany.

I also found some interesting statistics to back up my research into a study on Sweden, that proved that the banning of prostitution had negative harmful impacts on sexual offences causing the average mean number to double over a period of 15 years.

This helped back up my evidence that the ban seemed more inherently harmful than the sex work.

I spent the majority of this week typing up multiple drafts of my essay, which ultimately led to my third draft and heavy restructuring of the essay to make sure my argument was concise, but heavily reinforced by my bibliography. This proved particularly difficult when evaluating the argument between Hart and Devlin as not only was it hard finding their original source arguments which had be unaltered, it was made even more difficult by hearing both of their compelling arguments and having to decide which one was right in my opinion. Further I had to compare their arguments to modern day swell, as they originally took place in the 70's and the publics 'shared morality' has changed significantly since then so I had to find away to evolve their argument to speak about todays society and the laws that were regionally made in the 70's but are still enforced today.
